I've finally had a chance to work on my car again. The Griffin aluminum radiator is in place after sweating bullets trying to slide that little puppy down without wiping out all the cooling fins. It's in place and looks good.
I was considering using SPAL fans but with all the implications of a weak alternator, poor old wiring from 1969, I decided to rebuild using the standard set up. Not a big deal but this area of my car was a huge Mickey Mouse set up, which means there are a couple of things not known to me since the car wasn't quite there as an example of stock.
I need your opinions here because frankly, messing around too much exposes that 500 dollar radiator to being gouged. To say I'd freak out is an understatement.
So, as weenie as these questions are, I'd appreciate your thinking.
The fan shroud. In order to align the holes for the top of the fan shroud, I have to pull back hard to get them to line up. Is this what you've experienced? It seems like it's as much as an inch off and the shroud doesn't "want" to be pulled back that far. The two lower left and right tabs fit nicely behind the raditor tabs without using the clips to hold them there. This seems to be a very tight fit also. Are they needed? Also the plastic shroud tabs sit at the bottom of the bracket on the radiator. By installing the clips, I'd raise the entire fan shroud up by as much as a half inch. I've tugged and pulled already and I think that would begin to stress the fan shroud at the bottom where it follows underneath the radiator.
Again, I can add the clips and try different approaches. The issue is how darn fragile the back of the raditor is and not ruining a piece that cost a boat load of money.
Rick.
