: 1969 Heater controls- Are they one peice, or can one lever be replaced?
AHSOM70 Oct 10th, 03, 07:52 AM On my girlfriends 69 camaro the heater/fan switch is broken off. You can make work if you stick a key or a knife or something in there and slide it up and down, but now that its getting colder out, she needs to be able to turn it on and off easier.
Can just the fan switch lever be replaced, or do i need to replace the whole panel?
Does anyone repop those yet or will i be going ebay?
Thanks!
Ben
click Oct 10th, 03, 11:11 AM Ben on my 69 with a/c the fan speed switch is on the top of the cluster and slides sideways left to right with the tab. They are available at our sponsor Ground Up restoration as well as most other sources of parts.
If that tab is broken off, yes that switch can be replaced but you have to pull the whole unit out which requires nearly removing the dash cluster. Take your time and dont force things and it will come out for you. The switch is bolted to the top of that assembly and the wire clip pushes right into it easily. Be sure you get the switch for non a/c if you dont have a/c they are different.
Good luck, and you might need a few bandaids after you fidget under the dash there awhile.

DjD Oct 10th, 03, 01:29 PM Hi Ben - I have a non-air unit with the 3 vertical switches (no horiz switch like the A/C unit) Mine has the fan motor switch broken off. This is meant to stay as one unit as the hinge points are a pin that the next piece has a hole in and slids onto. Then there is a spring washer and the end of the pin is flaired, rivit style to retain each hinge point. The whole thing is put together in this same manor, a pin has another piece fot over it and then the pin is flattened. The switch the fan lever operates is the only part that screws in to this unit.
If you are really handy you could improvise and take this beastie apart and replace the broken lever but it wasn't designed with repair in mind...
I can snap a digital image or two later this weekend if you want to see it...
Jim - The A/C unit must be a bit different...
click Oct 10th, 03, 03:03 PM Guessing the a/c is different as Dennis says, thanks DjD for the heads up. Follow DjD's ideas to fix yours or surf ebay for a replacement.

If you could, i would really appreciate it. That would keep me from having to tear apart the dash just to get an idea... smile.gif
Thanks!

Closer, the retaining bar is held on by 2 pins that are mushroomed to hold the bar in place. You might be able to drill out, tap and use small screws.

More up Close, where the lever is attached. This is the one that would be the hardest to drill and re-fasten as there is no clearence on the back side.

The other side, note that the spring clip and pin are not the same as the pin on the previous picture. Each side of the connection is offset from the other making it very hard to repair. Grinding off the flattened retainer area will get this thing apart but leave you with something you can't fasten back together.

red69camaro Oct 13th, 03, 08:33 AM The nova's had the same one up until 73 I believe. I got mine on Ebay for about $15 It looks like new and it works like a charm.
HwyStarJoe Oct 14th, 03, 01:42 AM I'm in the same boat. Better to replace the whole unit as one. They're always on Ebay.
