View Full Version : electric fan placement
zack 68 Feb 20th, 04, 05:59 AM hey guys i switched to a march pulley system and wanted to go with an elecrtic fan setup instead of the one on the pulley system. my ? is which side of the radiator should i mount it on. should i have it in the engine bay blowing toward the front of the car or on the front of the radiator blowing toward the engine?
thanks for the info,

bretcopsey Feb 20th, 04, 07:15 AM Everything I've ever read states that a fan mounted in the engine bay sucking air is more effective than on the front of the radiator blowing through.
zack 68 Feb 20th, 04, 07:58 AM wish i had a reversable direction fan so i could do just that but i dont. its either in front blowing through or on back blowing forward. wich would work for now?

bretcopsey Feb 20th, 04, 09:19 AM Well, blowing forward while driving at any speed would be overcome by the air the car is pushing through. In other words, I don't think it would work very well that way.
Sounds like you have no choice but to mount it in front of the radiator and have it blow towards the firewall.
By the way, awesome car! It's making me lean towards silver/gray-whenever the time comes!
zack 68 Feb 20th, 04, 10:28 AM thanks bret thats what i'll do for now. but in the future i'm looking at a be cool radiator with a twin fan setup i can mount on the back of the radiator to suck the air in.
thanks

Brian Lewis Feb 20th, 04, 11:24 AM Zach its a DC motor, what happens when you wire the Positive/Negative backwards, unless there is a Diode it has to turn the opposite direction!
zack 68 Feb 20th, 04, 01:19 PM hey Brian i'll try that to see what happens

ZZ430DropTop67RS Feb 20th, 04, 03:28 PM Just fitted this BeCool radiator today, with dual Flexalite puller fans, and a March pulley system.

(Just reversing the leads will make the motor run backwards, but unless you reverse the fan blades it won't pull)
Brian Lewis Feb 20th, 04, 04:50 PM Don, I was thinking possibly his fan is a reversal fan, one where the blades are pitched in a way that it doesn't matter if its a pusher or puller.
Question for you though, is that a Flex A Lite TWINVIEW 320 fan setup??? Isn't that rated at 1800 cfm only? Or is that the Low Profile 220 rated at 2500cfm? Are you using Nylon Bolts to secure thru the aluminum core?
ZZ430DropTop67RS Feb 20th, 04, 05:28 PM Brian, yeah, those are only the 320's
I've never tried them before, I normally use the twin Spal's
I had very little room from the waterpump pulley to radiator, with the BB and the March system.
I really wanted to use the Mark VIII fan, but it wouldn't fit. These fans are exactly 22 inches long which fits the rad width just right.
I know they are not optimal, but we're going to give them a shot.....and then I'll panic. graemlins/clonk.gif
And I used the nylon ties that came with the fans.
prostreet69camaro Feb 21st, 04, 11:39 AM ZZ , I dont know if I would trust the tyraps thru the radiator. The one problem I have ran across is they rub the core fins and will put a hole in your radiator. It is not fun getting a 500.00 radiator repaired besides making it look good again. Be cool makes some adjustable brackets that you can mount the fans to. The brackets are made out of aluminum.
zack 68 Feb 21st, 04, 12:31 PM hey it did reverse. i tried it today and it worked. btw that is an awsome looking fan setup. i had something simular in mind. hey maybe if it doesn't work for your big block it will work great on my 383 small block. :D :D :D
