View Full Version : Which Vintage Air kit do I need?
1968camaro123 Feb 25th, 04, 06:45 AM Guys,
My car is a 68 that originally had AC, I ripped out all of the ducting and cables for the original because it was all so worn down and falling apart. I need the kit that completly replaces EVERYTHING for the heater and air conditioner. The stock controls are still in the center dash but I'll use the little Vintage Air oval control panel if it makes it easier. I've heard of a few different ones such as the Generation II or the Sure fit?? Which one is the one that I want?
Thanks,
Donnie
1968camaro123 Feb 25th, 04, 06:46 AM Also, what's the "frontrunner"?
Thanks again,
Donnie
smqhlp Feb 25th, 04, 07:45 AM I am not sure of the part number on this but call them up they are very helpful!! A couple of things to take into consideration if you are installing yourself. The unit they send replaces the unit that once resided under the hood. It is much more efficient but it can be very difficult to install because that dash area is so tight. I would suggest removing your seats and having a buddy with you to get it in. Also they will ask you the year and engine so they can figure out what brackets you need to mount the condenser. I am not sure about the 68 but my 69 mounts on the drivers side. In hindsight I wish i had not used the stock configuration because it makes it a little harder to find other brackets and pulleys to make everything line up just right. (Unless you plan on using all the older stuff) The frontrunner system is an all encompasing belt drive system. It is designed to provide a seamless installation for all your drive systems (Alternator, A/C, Power Steering) very cool product but very $$$$
Good Luck
Brian Lewis Feb 25th, 04, 09:13 AM Be sure to search this forum and talk to Crow, he is selling the Surefit systems for $849, I just bought one myself! GROUP BUY....
It will come with everything you will need.
You will probably have to remove the passenger fender to get the old heater box and motor out, that only takes about an hour to do. They also include the brackets necesary to mount the compressor. A less expensive alternative to the Frontrunner belt system is a March Performance serpentine system which can be purchased from Summit for $500-$700 depending on the kit you need/want. They have an interesting one that mounts the alternator on the passenger side, ac compressor just below that on the passenger side as well, power steering on the driver side, all with new serpentine belts/pulleys.
$678 at summit

They also have this option for for $603 with the AC on the driver side:

crowenate Feb 25th, 04, 01:58 PM Hey guys, sorry I havent been here in awhile but Ive been so busy I havent had much time to keep trak of everything.
Donnie,The best kit for you is the sure fit part# 54067-vcu-a you use your standard controls with that kit the price is 896.00 in the group deal.Instead of 849.00.
Ans they make a front runner kit that is 1499 polished with compressor, alt, water pump, everything except power steering pump.they are 1499 for small block and if you get that and a ac unit the ac is a little cheaper because no compressor with it so both front runner and ac runs around 2250.00.
Thanks Brian for letting them know about the deal Im running on vintage air.The sure fits are 896.00 though instead of 849.00 But you were close. smile.gif
Brian Lewis Feb 25th, 04, 02:42 PM Sorry about that, couldn't recall the exact price smile.gif
crowenate Feb 25th, 04, 03:32 PM Thats no problem,I appreciate you passing the word along, that means alot. Thanks
1968camaro123 Feb 25th, 04, 03:55 PM Thanks alot guys! I don't have the money as of right now but I'll definitely be talking to CROW as soon as I do!
Also, what's the difference between the sure fit and the generation II?
Thanks again,
Donnie
crowenate Feb 25th, 04, 04:24 PM Hey,
That sounds good just give me a shout. The difference in the two kits are.The sure fit is for the most part direct bolt in and you can use your stock controls and it is made for your car.The gen2 are more for cars without the sure fit option and for people wanting to customize the kit, different control, hoses, and things like that.IMO if they make a sure fit for your car and your not doing a real custimized one off type vehicle I would go with the sure fit.
1968camaro123 Feb 25th, 04, 05:38 PM Sweet man, thanks alot!

sixd8rs Feb 27th, 04, 05:55 PM Keep in mind, the sure fit is a cable driven box. Unless its been upgraded. The GenII compact is electronic and uses the oval Stremline control. As for mounting brackets, either box you use you still have to bend/modify the mounting brackets. Drill new holes, ect. If you dont mind some custom stuff (the control) I would get the GenII compact in a heart beat! Just my opinion! I am currently installing a GenII compact with streamline control, and polished Front Runner in a factory a/c 68. I sold everything except the defrost duct. Here is the front Runner.

crowenate Feb 28th, 04, 10:21 AM The sur fit still is cable driven,I am glad you posted a good picture of the front runner.I think it is the best looking setup on the market. And your engine with the polished intake and stainles hoses make it look that much better.Great job! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
1968camaro123 Feb 29th, 04, 05:16 PM How much better is an electric setup than a cable driven one? Also, how much custom work is needed to get the GenII system to work or how much harder is it than a surefit? The front runner is around $500 more than the other pulley setup right?
Thanks,
Donnie
crowenate Feb 29th, 04, 07:38 PM Im not familiar with what comes with the march system, but you get everything except the power steering pump with the front runner. The thing I tell my customers on the vintage air kits is if you are building a car that there is a sure fit kit for go with the sure fit kit.The gen2 is good for someone whoe is doing a custom rebuild that is going to install a custom dash and things like that. But its all what you want is the main thing.
1968camaro123 Mar 1st, 04, 06:27 AM Crowenate- Thanks alot bro! I'll end up just going with the surefir but I just wanted to check and see the pros/cons of both.
Thanks again,
Donnie
