I have a trim tag that indicates factory air, although every component forward of the firewall has been stripped. I don't have a numbers match car. As I understand it, only about 34,000 of the 238,000 (approx #'s) 69's had AC to begin with. If I did reinstall it, I suppose it wouldn't resemble the original, but would be something more like a Vintage Air setup. Right now I am leaning towards just doing a delete, for the time being- in the long run, am I nuts to eliminate it if it was originally coded?

Let me know if you do, I have a full American Graphiti AC Delete Box for sale, its basically brand new, tested fitted and used in the garage, then I decided to spend the bucks and go vintage air now so I have a bunch of boxes with like 50 parts + I'm now switching out to serpentine pulley system because the vintage air needs new a new pulley as well.

Box does need slight modification in order to allow lower heater hose to be accessed, at least it did on mine.

There are no codes on a 69 trim tag to indicate anything to do with A/C. Can only tell coupe, convertible, and interior and exterior colors, alsong with style trim options (and by extension some engine sizes like Big block, Z28, L48 etc).

That being the case you can do whatever you want as far as A/C or just heat. BUT a non A/C heater system duct will not cover the hole in the firewall for a A/C car becasue the duct is about 8" high, but an A/C cutout is about 10" high. Each system has it's own components and wiring and one will not work with the other. I figure it costs about 900 to install a complete factory A/C system out of used parts. Maybe slightly more if you have a big block. The engine side components will run the bulk of this cost, probably in the 600 range. It's going to cost 300 to 400 to change over the a Non A/C system if you have to replace an A/C duct system inside the car and you could probably sell the inside A/C components and recover most of your costs. You can't use half of each system, and you won't have any upper dash air flow (the two outer vents on the dash) if you have an A/C car and don't keep the A/c system. On a non A/c car these go through two valves out into the cowl area and bring fresh air into the car. The valves are controlled by the upper slide lever on the kickpanels.

If you have an A/C car and don't want to spend the money on the engine component stuff, get something like that american grafiti A/C delete box and install it. That's the cheapest way out, and you could always go back to A/C in the future.

I've done the mods suggested by Brian to make the American box work. No big deal but it does take some time.

Hey guys, I also have the american graffity delete box, and am having trouble getting it to fit. The main problem now is with the inner fender on, there is only about a 1/4'' between the box and the inner fender. There is no way a heater hose could be installed. I noticed on the picture above the inner fender was not yet mounted. Any one have a simular problem? Anyone have a cure other than having to cut a section out and repairing it? Any pics? This is really frustrating, it is also a bummer to spend $130 on something that does not fit.

I have the same issue, you will have to modify the box or call American Graffiti and tell them to get their stuff right because obviously its an issue with the mold and not our cars.

I just received the american graffiti box recently and they have made the necessary modification for the lower hose clearance. I checked this out before I ordered from them and they knew that there was a problem. It sounds like they patterned the original mold by fitting it to a nova, and had not checked the fit to a first generation camaro. Everything appears to be okay clearance wise. I should be installing it in the next couple of weeks.

Hi, I am a new member and was wondering where to get the American Graffiti delete box? Has anyone recently installed one of the newer boxes that has been modified?

Thanks

American Graffiti 303-275-9099
They are $129 when I bought mine.
Be sure to get a new Seimens motor for $20 at AutoZone while you are at it.

Thank you, Brian

Considering the tight location where the heater hoses are located on AC equiped cars, I was wondering if it would be possible to use a non-AC heater core and modify the American Graffiti Box to use a non-AC heater core.

I guess the first thing I need to know is if a non-AC heater core would fit in a factory AC equiped car?

No it won't because there is a big damper in the inner heater box that fills the entire opening in the firewall. There is no way to get the heater core, or the tubes past that door.

OK, thanks Mark, that is what I needed to know. I have been reading through a lot of the old threads on heater boxes and you really seam to know your stuff. Thanks for your help.

I don't think there is a template, unless you can find someone with their A/C out of the car to make one for you. Use the flange on the inner heater box, since that is what fits thru the hole into the engine compartment. There is about a 1/4" clearance around the flange and the edge of the opening is rolled into the engine compartment to stiffen it up.

They (classic, year one, Ricks, Ground up, etc.) sell a complete A/C (or non A/C) firewall. It is esentially the entire peice that fits on the front of the cowl. If your engine and wiring is out this is much easier to install.
