View Full Version : Question for Camcojb
oger Apr 25th, 04, 05:51 PM Jody I see you have an early Nova in your stable of cars. I have a question about what type of electric fan you are running. My 67 has a Becool radiator and a Black Magic fan (I had the fan laying around)If I an going 20MPH the thing runs at 160deg. If I get stuck in traffic it will climb until I get out of traffic. This is not some killer motor just a 9to1 327 with air(that I can't use until something gets changed). The convertor is a little loose for the gear ratio but not that loose. The big problem as you know is no room. Maybe 4 1/2in at the most. Help
camcojb Apr 25th, 04, 06:22 PM That one was before I knew about the Mark VIII fans. One of those would probably be real tight, but should fit with trimming.
I ran both a stock clutch fan with shroud and later a Spal 16" puller. The Spal did pretty good, pretty much stayed under 195 or so and fits easily. The Mark VIII would still blow it away though. I think about 4 to 4.5" is about as thin as you can trim it though, but the motor is offset some so you can often sneak it past the water pump pulley.

Silver69Camaro Apr 25th, 04, 08:45 PM I know you didn't ask me, but I really don't think your problem is the fan. How is your radiator?
I ask because I ran that fan with a new 3-core stock radiator with a fairly healthy 350, and it ran 180* all day never above 195*. Worked real well for me.
camcojb Apr 26th, 04, 04:49 AM Generally, If it stays at 160 going 20 mph and heats up when stopped it's an airflow problem. If he couldn't get it to cool under load or going down the freeway it's a radiator/pump problem. Since it only heats up when he stops moving and there's no extra airflow other than the fan, I'd say a higher cfm fan would do the trick.

DjD Apr 26th, 04, 05:41 AM Could be timing if everything else checks out, not enough initial. You can test that by kicking the rpm up to about 1800 and sit and see if the temp still climbs...
Also if the rad core is too thick for the fan idle flow can be restricted. Where is your AC condensor located? And that external trans cooler core? If they are all stacked up in front of the rad core it may take 20mph to get any air flowing through to the engine...
oger Apr 26th, 04, 03:36 PM When I put the car together it had a cheap 4 core brass radiator stock scroud with a big flex fan and a small electric inside the scroud. It was livable with that combo. I could use the air unless I was stuck in real bad traffic and it was 105deg outside. I thought the Becool would be an upgrade but the scroud and small electric fan will not fit. That is how the Black Magic ended up on the car. I took the radiator and another Black Magic and put it in the Nova wagon when I stuck the Vortec motor in it. The wagon is perfect with that combo but it is a manual trans and has no air. I seem to remember there was a place to get the MK-V111 fans but I don't remember.
camcojb Apr 27th, 04, 06:51 AM Just ordered one from https://www.rockauto.com for $138. Don't forget to get a 70 amp relay to run that fan. The least expensive one I've seen is http://www.jcwhitney.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10101&productId=256&catalogId=10101&langId=-1

69ProTouring Apr 27th, 04, 08:07 AM What about the unit that varies fan speed from 60% to 100% (dependind on what the thermostat senses) and is supposed to start the fan at a slower speed? I think there was a short tech article on it in the latest PHR? Just curious if anyone has tried it.
airtime Apr 27th, 04, 09:23 AM i have a 67 camaro with a factory 300hp 327 (with a 268 extreme energy cam) auto trans (700r4), and factory a/c (not working at this time). i have a new stock 3-core radiator with a single electric puller fan (maybe 16"). i removed the stock fan shroud and built a new fan shroud out of sheet metal, nothing fancy just bent the metal into a box shape to fit the radiator. it's about 3 1/2 inches thich. sealed the sides of the shroud to the radiator with soft rubber seals (exterior door seals for a house) and mounted the fan in the center of the shroud. no over heating problems. fan only comes on when setting at idle and as soon as it comes on you can watch the temp gauge drop until the fan cuts off.i run a tune port fuel injection and the computer cuts the fan on around 225 degrees. i guess my point is, have a good shroud set up to pull the air across the radiator.
CarlC Apr 27th, 04, 02:35 PM Scott,
I too wanted the two-speed option, but the '98 version is single-speed only.
Does anyone know if the earlier versions are two-speed? An easy way to tell is to remove the inspection plate on the motor next to the plug. If one of the terminals is dummied, it's a one speed fan.
The '98 version is quiet. On mine with the hood shut I cannot hear the fan come on at idle when sitting in the car. Even outside the car it's not easy to hear.
oger Apr 28th, 04, 04:03 AM Isn't there a Ford site that lists whats what about the fan. Sizes etc.
