: cheap and effective elect. fan setup?
FromTheGroundUp Jul 21st, 04, 06:07 PM My dad and I are just now finishing up a 4-year rebuild of my 1969 RS/SS Camaro. The fan clutch on it just went out, and we are toying with the idea of possibly putting an LS1 in it in the future. We want to upgrade to an electric fan setup, but are low on money, as the restoration is complete. Anybody know any effective, cheap set-ups for a '69 camaro? Any input is greatly appreciated!
camcojb Jul 21st, 04, 06:55 PM You can get a new Lincoln Mark VIII fan for about $155. that will cool any engine you put in there. That and a 70 amp relay and you're pretty much done. About the best deal I know of for a new unit. You can also go the wrecking yard route for a lot less. Taurus, Mark VIII, are a couple that work well.
I got the last one from Houston Performance. (http://www.houstonperformance.com/)
The relay can be bought for about $10 from JC Whitney or other parts stores. Here's a pic of an install on a friends car.

wayner Jul 22nd, 04, 03:03 AM The taurus fan is also a good fan, alot of guys were getting them at wreckers for anywhere from $15 - $35. Here is a link to a site that sells them for $117 brand new with a lifetime warranty on the motor.

Here is a link with info on the taurus fan, although in this link they only wire low speed, it is a 2 speed fan and will move large volumes of air.

I have a taurus fan cooling my 461 BBC and in low speed it cools great 90% of the time, the other 10% of the time in heavy traffic or very high outside tempss., I run high speed.
4U 2 NV Jul 22nd, 04, 03:12 AM I went to a junk yard where I know the guy. He had a 1991 Camaro with an factory electric fan. He let me have it for $35 bucks. I put it on my 1975 with few mods (drill extra hole on the plastic on top of the fan to match the holes where the original fan shroud goes.) All the other holes were in the right place. Did not have to drill out any metal. Hooked it up to a relay, with the temp sensor off the same camaro, this way the fan only turns on when the coolant reaches 190 degrees. I put the temp sensor so the fan is not always on. I've seen guys that hook it up direct, I think this will only eat up your fan faster than it should.
Drewman74 Jul 22nd, 04, 10:24 AM I installed a Taurus fan wired for the single high speed. I think I paid $35 shipped. It cools my 469 Pontiac motor great.
nick V Jul 22nd, 04, 02:14 PM anyone have an ideea what the mark VIII and taurus elec fans flow? in CFM? - Checked out some of the links - looks like Taurus electric fan flows 2000cfm...

wayner Jul 23rd, 04, 03:07 AM I have seen these numbers for flow;
Mark VIII - 5000cfm, but have also seen 3500cfm
Taurus - low speed 2000cfm, hi speed up to 4000cfm, but think its closer to 3300cfm
I don't know whether these numbers are correct, what I do know is that both of the fans mentioned are good fans and move large volumes of air, they also draw considerable current, I know i run the taurus fan and have both speeds wired, and have no problem cooling my 461BBC.
onovakind67 Jul 23rd, 04, 03:28 AM I think the Taurus fan flows much more than 2000 cfm. We recently replaced one of the Jegs 2800 cfm 15" Proform Mustang fans with a 2-speed Taurus fan on a 355" blown 280Z. He was experiencing elevated engine temperatures as the weather was warming up and wanted a solution. I set the Taurus fan up for 2-speed operation with low coming on at 185°, high on at 205°. He reports that it has never gone into high speed, even in the 95-100° weather we've had recently.
nick V Jul 23rd, 04, 04:05 AM Anyone have the depth on the taurus or markVIII fans? - I've got a little less than 4" clearance between pulley and radiator...Got a long waterpump setup in my 69 - should have used a short setup - but already have the edelbrock aluminum pump and March serpentine setup. Thank smile.gif
MStennes Jul 24th, 04, 10:52 AM Nick,
I have the same set up and should have gone short water pump also, but I had everything installed and bought a Be Cool radiator this year. My Lincoln fan wouldnt fit no matter what I tried with the serpintine setup. I bought a Taraus fan and if fits perfectly.
