Okay heres the deal guys,

Origionally an i6 car so the heater inlets are about 1/8 of an inch behind the valve covers and so they are not connected to anything. The blower does work but its just ambient air.

I do need some sort of heater but more importantly defroster.

What parts do I buy and where, and about how much $

You need about 3 feet of 3/4" heater hose and 3 feet of 5/8" heater hose and 4 hose clamps. L6 heaters and small block heaters are the same, space should not be an issue just hook up your hoses (assuming you have a heater core) and your good to go.

Like Mark said, the heater core nipples/tubes on the firewall are in the same location on a 6 as on a small block. If your tubes are that close to the valve covers, you have something else going on, like the wrong heater core, wrong motor mounts, or the subframe is too far back.

Like Mark & Eric said... the hoses will be very close to the valve cover, but they'll fit.

Hmm, well does someone have a good pic of how it is supposed to look?

Also where do the heater lines mount to on the engine?

Thanks again guys

The 5/8" hose goes from the fitting on the intake manifold to the bottom pipe on the heater core, and the 3/4" hose goes from the top pipe on the heater core to the fitting on the water pump. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I put a pic up on my website (very bottom of first page) its on my signature

Is that normal?

It looks like if there were any way to get a hose in there it would be melted right away unless it turned 90* and tuck up right aginst the firewall

Brian -

Are you sure you have the correct motor mounts?

I was looking at the pictures of heater cores in Rick's catalog, and maybe if you had the right heater core it would work as is, because the outlets on a SB Camaro heater core do bend toward the passenger side quite a bit (it's hard to tell from your photo how much they bend). But it looks like your motor is closer to the firewall than on my 68 SB, which is why I asked about the motor mounts.

I don't have a picture of my 68 here at the office, but I found this one on epay, and it looks right.

Those hoses will go on. They will just be tight getting then in there. Make sure you are putting the right size hose on the correct nipple. And it would be best to make sure the hoses are warm or slightly lubed at the ends to get them on to the heater box. Those heater nipples are pretty fragile and you can cack the heater core very easily with too much force. The angle and heater hose bracket and/or ties on the inner fender should keep it away from the motor.

i am certan that they are the right mounts as i had to buy them from ricks because my old subframe had strange 70s vintage ones welded in crooked.

maybe I am just going crazy but on that picture the inlets look almost 4" further to the passengers side than mine ill take another pic of them from further away

and when i was trying to see if some hose would fit i managed to get one to fall out (not sure if i broke anything but it sure didnt help my confidince) however i am totally gutting the interior so I may as well take out the heater core too.

How much do replacements cost and would that be overkill or is it worth it on a car this old.

A replacement heater core from Rick's is only $44, but you should also be able to get one at a Napa or Autozone.

Sounds like you'll need a new core, as those tubes should not move, and they are pretty easy to break. No biggie. Old heater cores and new carpet are not a good mix anyway. My 68 has medium blue carpet with a pink/purple stain from where the previous owner popped the core.

ok well i'm stil a bit curious, are the pipes coming out of the heater core the ones that stick through the firewall?

Also as long as i am replacing the heater core what aside from cleaning should i do to the heaer system?

Something is not right with your setup, either engine mounts or the heater core; here's my untouched original, showing the relationship and clearances you should have with the small-block setup:
