View Full Version : heater core
HO69 Mar 7th, 05, 08:08 AM In a 69 car with a SB and A/C, how many bolts are holding the box for the heater core?
Are they all inside the car or are any of them on the engine side of the firewall?
Also, I see they have seal kits but they say they are for cars with out A/C, what do you use if anything for a car with A/C?
THANKS
Run269 Mar 7th, 05, 03:01 PM all the bolts are under the dash, 2 maybe 3. i have 2 but i think a 3rd one should be in the lower right corner as you look under the dash. my corner was damaged so i'm not sure if there should be one there or not. there are also 2 studs that go thru the firewall and nuts go on these to help hold the underhood box.
i got lucky and reused my old seals, they were still soft, they are also molded to the doors so you can't replace them. there was one foam seal i replaced with common foam weatherstripping available at the hardware stores. be careful with the large rubber seal that goes between the box and the firewall. nobody is reproducing this one yet, that i know of.
i did buy the heaterbox seal kit and used one seal from it on the flapper door that routes air up to the defrost ducts for the windsheild. it was actually the center of a larger seal from the kit and was supposed to be thrown away after separating the real seal. it fit perfectly so what the heck. i also used the 2 seals that mate the Y-shaped duct to the dash vents.
HO69 Mar 8th, 05, 03:13 AM There are two bolts that I removed, there is something like a bolt in the bottom corner but its not a bolt ( but will double check). I just wanted to make sure before I went any further. I have the bolts out, but the box will not come out. I'm guessing it may have been sealed by glueing it on. I didn't want to break it forcing it out if there were more bolts.
Thanks Again, both with this question and the A/C wiring harness!
JimM Mar 8th, 05, 05:31 AM pretty sure that thing "that's bot a bolt" will be a stud, with a nut on the other side
HO69 Mar 8th, 05, 09:19 AM It has a smooth head from the inside of the car, If it is a bolt with a nut on the other side, I'm assuming you mean the engine compartment side, I'm not sure how you would get to it has it would be below the heater core pipes, which in themselves are not reachable.
I will try and look at it better tonight.
JimM Mar 8th, 05, 04:49 PM if it's like the 6 that hold on my non-a/c box, it's a "stud" with a flat round head, that is pressed through the inside heater box, and goes through the firewall.
Woody68 Mar 9th, 05, 05:57 AM I have a 68 camaro small block with AC that I just replaced the heater core on. There were three studs that go through the firewall that have nuts on them that must be taken off to get the heater box out. Yes they are on the engine compartment side. Two are on the right side of the cover (nearest the engine) and one is on the opposite site under and closest to the blower motor. I took the fender off to get to that nut as it is very difficult to get to unless you cut the inner fender or pry it out and try to reach up behind it.
HO69 Mar 9th, 05, 06:07 AM I figured the fender needs to come off, any tricks to removing it safely?
Woody68 Mar 9th, 05, 06:24 AM Tape the edge of the door and fender where the two meet to help avoid chipping paint. While it can be done by yourself, it helps to have a friend helping in the final stages of removal.
HO69 Mar 9th, 05, 08:43 AM When you remove the fender, can you leave the hood hinge attached? I'v already removed the hood.
Woody68 Mar 9th, 05, 09:57 AM Yes
kencar69 Mar 9th, 05, 10:09 AM great one less thing to worry about if I do that myself.
HO69 Mar 9th, 05, 11:04 AM Thanks Guys!
