when I paint the splatter paint, are the "cocktail shakers" painted also or do I splatter then install them.

Sorry about the first non reply. My first attempt. The shakers do get painted. I would paint them first, then install. I have a 69 conv't.

Mine are black and were installed after the trunk was shot. I have seen them the same color as the trunk with the splatter on them also... I don't know which is correct. I have seen shakers at the swap meet and salvage yard and they have always been black with a thick coat of crud on them. Makes me lean toward them being orig. that way....

For what it's worth - my '67 is splattered.

Mine are also splattered aqua/black.

Pipeman, I am restoring a '67 convertible that I believe to be very original having known the family that has owned it since day one. The cocktail shakers in the trunk are finished in black. I believe the factory installed them in the trunk and then sprayed the spatter paint. Imagine the guy at the factory spraying the spatter and doing his best not to completely cover the shakers, but having to spray around the base of the shaker, so some spatter gets on the feet and the lower part of the shaker as overspray. That's what mine look like. Of course, there were days at the factory when the guy maybe didn't feel like doing his best and just sprayed all over the place, so I wouldn't argue with someone if there shakers where totally covered with spatter. http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

All kidding aside, The cocktail shakers are filled with weights and fliud. They provide ballist to dampen road vibration. Without the regidity of the metal roof it was necessary....

Don't forget about the trunk mat.. It goes down before the shakers go in so I don't think the shakers would be there when the painting was being done...

My original floor mat was cut to fit around the feet of the shakers. The outer sections actually hardened up and snapped off. They fell down into the fender extension area outboard of the shakers.

Floor mats were not a standard feature in cars. They came as part of the Z87 deluxe interior (I think), therefore not every convertible, or coupe had trunk mats so I don't think they would be installed before the shakers were installed. Especially since they were installed by Fisher before the body was delivered to GM and the spare tire bracket was installed by GM on their side of the house.

Where was the mat split? I can picture the cutouts for the 2 feet of the shakers but they couldn't be just holes. There had to be a slit to the edge of the mat somewhere from each cut out. I don't question what your saying, just I have never seen it personally which leads me to believe I have never seen an orig. convertible trunk mat.

The mat was actually cut out in the shape of the feet, and the base of the shaker. There was a circle about 3" in diameter, then two cutouts in the shape of the two legs. My old original mat broke where the thin leftover peice outboard of the shaker was, it split from the area around the bolt straight out towards the fender. When I replaced it I cut the mat the same way as the original, but I didn't do as neat a job as the factory.

What bugs me is even if I cut the feet out and a circle for the base of the shaker I would have to remove the shaker to get it under the feet unless there was a slit that lead to the edge of the mat some where! I could live with mine the way it is but if it was cut out at the feet at lease it would not look squished from the weight of the shaker...

There is a slit that leads to the back edge of the mat. It leaves a flap on the outer edge that is loose. Let me look at mine after work tonight to see what the cut looks like.

Heres a couple of photos of my shakers. Keep in mind that

1)My car has been repainted and I didn't remove the shakers, so the white overspray should not be on the canisters.
2) The trunk mat is an 18 year old (now) repro one. I replaced my original and cut out the area around the shaker feet like the original one but I doubt the cuts are exactly the same. It was a functional rebuild at the time not a concourse restoration.
3) the left side mat has a section missing between the shaker and the tail panel. It snapped off one day when I was taking out the mat.

The split that allows the mat to be installed around the canister is perpendicular to the centerline of the car. (points toward the fender)
