I am trying to remove the old rotted top off of my 69 convertible. I want to sand and paint the frame. I cant seem to figure out how to remove the tack strip (see picture) How is it held in place? I dont see any screws or rivets. Any help would be appreciated.

This is by my old memory. On the front bow there are small triangular tabs that hold it in. in the rear, I believe the tack strip is pinched in the metal channel. Not easy to remove and replace.

I did the same as coach 420 then regretted it after I found out how much tack strips cost to replace…

I have to agree with Geezer on this one!
If the old one is servicable I would leave it alone and paint over and around it. They are expensive and a real PITA to reinstall correctly. It's almost impossible to get the chanel opened up to accept the new one and then get it pinched down evenly again. I was really affraid I was going to FU the top bow during the work.

Tack strips can take alot of abuse and still be more than usable for a new top. My suggestion would be to take a small screwdriver, pry out all of the old staples, then paint right over it. This is what I did with my top frame (although it was out of the car) Unless the strip is completely rotted or destroyed, you will not gain anything by pulling it out.

I think Bob is referring to the material that is in the rear bow, not the strip of metal that is screwed into the body of the car near the well liner. The material in the bow is a composition that is typically dried out and crumbling from use and age. Replacement material is inexpensive and can be pushed down in the channel and glued in place with weatherstripping adhesive. No big deal.

Yes I was talking about the material in the channel. Where can I find that material? I dont see it listed in any catalog.

I don't think I remember them being listed on the web site, but they carry them and about every other rag-top part you could need.

Most of the catalogs have it. Rick's First Generation calls it "convertible top frame tack strip". You order it by the foot. I recall that the 5/8" inch width was correct but check with them before ordering. You'll need to double layer it since it is thin, so order twice the length. :D
