: tone down

i have a 69 camaro rs/ss. right now it has a 355 with an edlebrock intake, 770 street avenger, comp headers to 3 inch flowmaster, and a performance timing gear. all of which came with the car when i bought it. the thing is i actually want to tone it down a bit. the car puts out a lot of exhaust fumes. you can't hang out by the car when it's running without walking away smelling like you've been in the pits. plus before i restored the interior it had that smell all inside. and between the headers and the timing gear, conversations near the car makes it seem like you're in a rock concert. needless to say it has plenty of go. my thoughts were with a double roller timing chain and an x-pipe. maybe a 670 street avenger. outside of that what can i do and will that stuff actually make a signifigant difference. i don't want to choke the power too much and i most def don't want to drop any extra coin if i don't have to at this point. any suggestions?

If you have a timing gearset vs timing chain the chain will eliminate the whine. Dynagear makes a very nice set with a brass thrust washer for the upper gear.

A 2 1/2" exhaust with Dynomax Super Turbos will also bring the noise level down, but to really quiet things you need to have tailpipes that exit out the back of the car. The fumes coming into the interior will also be greatly reduced. If you have 3-chamber Flowmasters you might try putting just the tailpipes on. Two chambers are pretty noisy.

IMO doing these two things first will be more beneficial than replacing the carb. That carb, though it may be a bit big, should be able to tune to your engine. Get the other things done, put in new plugs, check timing, etc. then tune the carb.
