: Prom module for ' 84 2.5ltr Camaro.
yankclip Apr 14th, 04, 11:50 PM Can anyone help direct me to a source to purchase a PROM unit for a 1984 2.5ltr engine. I have just put a brand new engine in this car, but it is performing badly on it's idling etc. I am told i need a new PROM unit which is obsolete in Chevy's system. Thanks in advance. yankclip@lanset.com yankclip@lanset.com
Everett#2390 Apr 15th, 04, 12:16 AM Welcome to the Club! I can't quite believe The General would obsolete this prom(program).
However, I suggest you try another dealership, or go www.thirdgen.org (http://www.thirdgen.org) and see if one will help there.
You will need VIN and trans type, Federal or Ca emissions, A/C or not, and maybe rear gear ratio.
I'm sure you have checked all the obvious problem areas and have eliminated them.
Almost wants to make you get a carb and stick on it just to make sure its the ECM screwing up.

dnult Apr 15th, 04, 04:48 PM I second thirdgen. If you can't purchase what you need you can burn a prom more than likely. It would be helpful to know what the numbers are on your ECM. That will determine what proms are likely to be compatible with yours. The junk yards may still have something you can use. I have done some programming on a 1997 vintage ECM (a 165 type) and found most everything on the thirdgen site. How much of a techi are you? Is burning proms your bag or are you wanting to just pay for the part and be done with it? Beware that the aftermarket prom dealers don't give you much for your money. But if burning proms isn't your bag consider hypertech, superchips, or any one of several other suppliers.
yankclip Apr 16th, 04, 04:24 AM Thank you guys for replying to my Prom problem.
Being totally ignorant about these things, i would need to find a replacement unit. An Auto tech i am not. The shop that did the work on the engine replacement did not even address other possibillities, like burning etc. If you would be kind enough to sort of explain that process i would most gratefull. Again, thank you very much for your post.

yankclip Apr 16th, 04, 04:30 AM Sorry, here are the Prom # gleaned from the module i have.Delco 185.
16038362CLF
DQ 8323 N
Svc ECM # 1226156
I hope these numbers are of help. Thanks again.
Everett#2390 Apr 16th, 04, 05:34 AM You might want to get a replacement controller, what the Prom plugs into. A GM mechanic I know has been telling me the prom's are pretty much protected from being electrically destroyed.
The only time one would burn a prom would be to update its program via GM's software boys. Most GM dealers have exchange basis for the controller at the parts counter.
If you do decide to have a prom burned, take your VIN along with you.
yankclip Apr 16th, 04, 10:06 AM YAHOO! My THANKS to everyone that took the time to help me out of my Prom predicamint. Good News, i went in person to my local Chevy dealer(all paperwork in hand) and was helped by a rep who has been in the Chevy Parts business a liong time.
Looks like we have found a new matching and updated Prom from G.M. (only dealers have access to some parts i found out) but it's ordered, and i will post back as soon as i know for sure it worked when it is put into my Camaro. FYI The part # is 0122691 and the phone number they called to order this part was 1-877-846-8243 Hope i might be able to help another Camaro owner when they get stuck for a part that is obsolete in Chevy's main comp system. graemlins/hurray.gif Thanks again guys, I'm glad i own a Camaro.
