Hey Guys,

Here's one that has me baffeled. I am ready to drop my 302 into my car and decided to mount the starter before dumping it in the car. I can't get the starter to line up on the mounting hubs on the block.
I have never had any problems before installing a starter. The casting number of the block is 3970010
the build date is VO189DZ so .. 9/18/69 right?
Are the 350 CID and the 302 starters different?
According to the numbers they used the same casting for the 350 but isnt a small block a small block?

Thanks for any help.

Ok I took the bell housing off and i got the starter to bolt up. The strange thing here is that i used this bell housing on my last 302 and it worked fine but now it wont go on the block witht he starter in place and vise versa any ideas?

Dave,

The nose cone is different depending on the size of the flywheel. 327/302 uses a 10.5" clutch and a 403 bellhousing. The 350 frequently uses an 11" clutch with the "621" bellhousing. The starter is basicaly the same but the nose is different. You can't mix and match. smile.gif

So if I have a 403 bell housing and "Supposedly I have a DZ block then the starter is differant than the 350 starter? My casting numbers indicate that it could have been either a 350 or a 302. The build date says it is a 302 but can't you sand that down and restamp it? The 403 I have will not work with any starter I have tried even the samll Hi torque units you can buy. I need some help!

Dave,

You need a 302/327 starter to work with the "403" bellhousing, not a 350 starter. IT WILL NOT WORK WITH A 350 STARTER.

The block for a 302/327/350 is all the same, no difference.

The block is not the issue. The starter is the problem. smile.gif Now, walk to Pep Boys and get one.

Dave  Dave, are you sure those are the numbers? V0189DZ decodes as January 89th...
