: muffler as loud as flowmaster, but doesn't resonate?
Tom Ziokowski May 27th, 04, 11:47 AM Hey guys I am looking for a new muffler for my car. I love the way flowmasters sound, but they resonate way too much for my liking. I was wondering if there was a muffler out there that is as loud or a little quieter than the flowmaster that doesn't resonate? I also do not want to pay a ton of money for them either.
thanks
Tom
67 camaro lady May 27th, 04, 03:11 PM hey we have a muffler shop my husband says the 60,70's or up (for a SUV)series of flowmasters are a little more quieter as much as prices call around for a god deal I wish we lived closer than we'd be able to line ya up (washington state). But I love flowmasters they are on everything I own 12+ camaros they just sound so good graemlins/waving.gif
Randy S May 27th, 04, 04:52 PM Resonance at idle or highway speeds? What series/style Flowmasters are you currently running? If you're running the old style two-chamber 40 series, there are a couple of other options - Super 40's and Delta Flows. A change to the Delta Flows might do the trick. You could always change to their 50 series, but I'd measure chamber length to ensure they'll tuck up tight.
I'm running 40 series Delta Flows and love 'em. Loud when you've got your foot in it and mellow when cruising.
Several on the board are running Dynomax and speak highly of them, but I don't recall any specific references to resonance.
Tom Ziokowski May 27th, 04, 05:16 PM thank for the help. Actually i am not running any flowmasters right now. I have just heard them on some of my friends cars. I might be a little out of place here but i just bought a 56 belair. I used to have a 95 formula. I am asking here because I know people have a lot experience and knowledge on this board.
I really don't car about resonance at idle, more when i am crusing. What do the super 40's aound like? I have never heard of them.
I love the way flowmasters sound too but i am afraid that they are going to dive me nuts after a while.
thanks
Tom
Randy S May 27th, 04, 06:04 PM Haven't heard a set of Super 40's firsthand, just read about them before ordering my Delta Flows. I've been around too many cars with the original 40 series, and at certain RPM's the resonance would rattle fillings from your head, (something I definitely wanted to avoid) so I went with the DF's.
Seems like I remember the Super 40's being stack ranked as louder than the Delta 40's and quieter than the original 40's, but it's been a while since I ordered.
Here's a comparison (http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/cgi-bin/flowmaster/mufflers.html) of most of their line.
They've got some sound bytes in the Super 40 (http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/cgi-bin/flowmaster/super40.html) section. Not really an acceptable substitute for hearing them in person, but it's a start.
DOUG G May 28th, 04, 01:49 AM I have the American Thunder series <40's> on my Camaro and have had no problems with resonance till here lately. Everything is fine till the exhaust has some heat in it, and only at idle.
robbm May 28th, 04, 02:01 AM I have the American Thunder system with Delta Flow 40s. I have virtually no resonance at all. I also have a Delta 40 on my truck that doesn't resonate. A buddy of mine has an older 50 series on his truck it resonates quite a bit. Seems like the Delta Flow mufflers are better for this than the old style. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
If you run full tail pipes, I don't think resonance will be a big problem....
Question: What's the difference between Super 40s and Delta Flow 40s?
Robb
Randy S May 29th, 04, 04:44 AM Robb brings up a good point in that rear-exit tail pipes vs turn-downs make a difference. I'm running tail pipes out the rear with a H-pipe close to the headers. The H-pipe helps as well.
Don't recall what the technical difference between Super 40's and DF 40's was. Maybe the box they're shipped in :D lol
Hot66ss May 29th, 04, 08:37 AM I have dynomax ultraflows on my chevelle with 3 inch pipe all the way back over the axel dumped behind the rear tires, its loud but not annoying and sounds wicked awesome. Keep in mind they are connected to a pretty nasty 11:1 383 small block with a big solid cam so im sure they would be more tame with a smaller pipe and motor
speedy-Z May 30th, 04, 05:46 PM I am running spin tech mufflers, low resonance, and they sound great and not like everyone eles. The best sounding muffler (IMO) are Borlas but, they are a bit pricey. as you can see everyone runs flowmasters.
DenRS May 31st, 04, 04:11 AM I have the American Thunder with the two muffles on my 69 and have no problems. However the single muffler system for first generation camaros might have some interior noise. I was in a different 69 camaro and also my brother's Nova with the single muffler system and you don't want to be stopped at a red light with the car in drive for too long. Of course both of those cars are auto's and mine is a 4 speed so idle speed may have something to do with it.
jschunke May 31st, 04, 05:20 AM Dynomax turbo flow (not super flow) are reasonably quiet and won't empty your wallet. Cadillac folks
usually go for them. I've got one as a resonator on
my '84 delta 88 and and its silent smile.gif It replaced a
flowmaster 50 series delta flow which was not as
quiet. Runs a little better too cause Dynomax has no
chambers. They also get quieter with age as carbon
builds up.
