quick question about my altenator on my 396. It seems that the fan peice just in front of the pulley is rubbing up agains the altenator itself. It's making a metal to metal sound like a fan hitting a piece of metal. can this damage the unit itself and how easy is it to fix. with the holidays I haven't had time to really look at it. thanks for the help

If someone leaned a tool against the fins while tightening the alternator, it could have bent one into the alt. case itself but then scratch lines would show there too. The fins can be bent back if thats the case. Just gently pry back with a screwdriver and make the bent fin line up with the other fins next to it. Maybe remove the alt. for this so you can spin it freely and test it before installing. smile.gif

mine was makin a noise awhile back... inside it,behind the bearing which is behind the fan, there is a bearing retainer, held on by 2 small screws. The screws had fallen out! They were stuck to the field magnet, and the retainer was bouncing around on the shaft, makin an awful screech when i reved it up. Screwed em back in (with a lil locktite) and good as new.
