: My rs was sold out from underneath me.
69Red Dec 2nd, 04, 03:14 PM The 69 RS I have been asking questions about (thanks for being so helpful) was sold out from underneath me.
The classic car dealer who I was dealing with had agreed to give me first refusal sold it tonight before I got there. I was trading him a 68 327 camaro I have and paying him some cash.
I understand that business is business but I have done quite a bit of business with him not to mention my family has purchased and sold several cars there.
Oh well I guess it was not meant to be. My wife really likes her 68, I was just wanting to upgrade it to a 69 RS.
Thanks again.
Yeah I guess business is business, but integrity goes a long way also, even in business. It sucks what happened, and it must not have been meant to be. I'm sure you can relate in thinking that maybe God has a better deal coming in the future. I too have been getting the short end of the stick lately, but my faith keeps me telling myself that someday, (maybe not in my earthly life) all the wrongs will somehow be made right.
This was just one deal. There will be others as you know. Keep after it, when it's right it will happen.
ZZ430DropTop67RS Dec 2nd, 04, 03:45 PM That's too bad to lose out on a car you really wanted.
Did you pay a deposit on it?
If not, cash talks louder than customer loyalty sometimes.
RS3SDL2MG Dec 2nd, 04, 03:47 PM upgrading to a 69 ????????????????????
I can not for the life of me figure out why the 69 is the one everyone put's on top , I know it to be a fact but have never understood it , 67 was the first year and has much more going for it , 68 is just a notch down from 67 , but the 69 will sell higher and faster every time ,, I hope you get another car and feel for you for what happened , those car dealers won't hold a car if someone want's to buy it , like you said just bizzzzzness !!!
better luck next time ,,,,
shoddy_F-body Dec 2nd, 04, 04:27 PM I agree 69 is not an upgrade. 68 is tops,with67 next because i dont like the round marker lights and the dang vent windows and 69 is next.I will catch flack for this but i find 69's bizarre looking. :D
kz1000ltd Dec 2nd, 04, 04:49 PM 69's are one of a kind, nuff' said. :D :D :D :D :D
Hey, check out the picture underneath my screen name on the left, is that cool or what? Thanks Dennis, I just hope you get Danny the Donkey fixed up too!!! graemlins/beers.gif
Red I can certainly feel for you. I've lost several deals for unexplained reasons, divorce case 69 Z all original I was the high bidder, but the guy figured out a way to get a buddy to buy the car at a price less than what I was willing to pay. I'm certain so he could get it back.
Another nice 69 SS a buddy lost in a divorce I could have bought from his ex, but decided against it. Instead a year later I discovered the dealer that bought it from her. I tried hard to buy the car, told him to name his price, the car was not for sale he insisted. I found out two months later he sold it for several thousand less than I had offered him.
Bottom line is it's hard to tell what drives some people. Often times it is all about timing. Someone caught your guy at a weak moment it sounds like. In my book the guy lacks integrity and I'd make it clear he lost a customer. It could also be that he's just hurting for cash and jumped at the first guy that was willing to hand some over, with no concern for your verbal agreement.
Regarding the 69 upgrade, I agree it's a personal choice, I've owned both but I prefer the 68 to a 69 especially in the RS.
I've had 2 67's, and thought the same about being most desirable being the first year and all. But then I got this 68 and find I like the cleaner look without vent windows like shoddy said. But then again the 68 seems to be treated like the redheaded stepchild of the first gens. Middle year between the first year 67 and the most popular 69. And the option documentation seems to be lacking for the 68 as well. You hear that you can tell a true 67 RS\SS\COPO because of this, or a 69 RS\SS\COPO because of that, but there seems to be this grey area for the 68. Cowl tag doesn't seem to reveal much. You really have to dig for the 68 info.
I think the 68 may be the most mysterious of the 3, and I'm keeping mine.
69Red Dec 2nd, 04, 05:15 PM Thanks for all the feed back.
It's not that I don't like the 68...I do.
I just think the changes they made in 69 made it look a little "tougher". JMO
No I did not have a deposit down, I was just trusting him at his word and assuming that my past business (and business I brought to him) would carry more weight for me.
But I understand the buyer was a cash buyer and I was trading + cash. It's true cash will win every time.
I'll get over it...but as for now I'm a little miffed and debating on whether or not I should express my frustration to the dealer.
Thanks for the support.
click Dec 2nd, 04, 05:20 PM Good rule I follow, " its worth the paper its written on " if its not in writing, its no deal.
Sorry you missed it but in a nice way you can remind him of the business you bring and that you will be looking for another car, no matter where it might be.
George1968327 Dec 3rd, 04, 03:53 AM Before I got my 68 I had 2 different people try to renegotiate the deal as I was there to pick the car up, cash in hand. One was a 69 Z and the other was a 67. CASH IN THE HAND!!! "Um, yeah, I was thinking the car is worth more than what you are giving me." The funny thing is I was giving what they were asking originally; I did not try to talk them down at all and the car I ended up with was less and exactly what I wanted. Frustrating. Good luck in finding another car with a good person that is selling it. They are out there.

Steve W Dec 3rd, 04, 10:30 AM Well, just my .02, but in the car biz, new, used or classic, cash IS king! I've been in the car biz a long time and that just seems to be the way it is. If you're looking for integrity from a dealer, you'll look a LONG time! Dealers have to factor in holding costs, repairs, potential repairs on the trade-in, holding costs on the trade-in, potential depreciation, etc. So, although your offer of a trade plus some cash seemed good, if someone came in with a fistfull of cash...oops! No trade to deal with and it frees up some cash to invest into the biz or buy something else. And if you call him on it, my guess is he'll make up some excuses like "I didn't know you were still interested", or "the 69 wasn't all that great, so I'll keep my eyes open for a better one for you", or "I left you a message...didn't you get it?"...something along those lines. But he may again at some point get a car you really want, so maybe its better not to burn that bridge.
As to desirability among first gens, yeah the 69 seems to be everyone's fave. A little lower, wider and meaner looking. And the 67 seems to comes in second by way of being the first, original Camaro.
But I prefer the 68 for a number of reasons such as:
Round wheel wells (as opposed to 69)
Staggered rear shocks (as opposed to 67)
No vent windows (as opposed to 67)
Interior design, especially the dash pods (as opposed to 69's more generic GM look)
TICK-TOCK-TACH...gotta love it! (68 only)
Horseshoe shifter (for automatics w/ console) (as opposed to 67)
Console gauges (as opposed to 67)
Chrome simuated stacks on the hood (for SS 350 models)(as opposed to 67 which was big-block SS only)
Seems like the 68 incorporated the best of all three, in my opinion anyway.
The 67 and 68 look very similar, it almost seems like the 69 is like the 1.5 generation Camaro. It sorta stands alone. Maybe that's another reason why they're so popular. At the local cruise-ins and car shows, there are alway more 69's than 67-68s combined, around here anyway.
But when you factor in convertibles, the 68 is by far the better looking car of all three, especially in red with black interior! tongue.gif (just kidding, hold the hate mail!)
No matter what your preference though, ALL the first gen Camaros are some of the best looking cars on the road, and that's why I actually drive mine...to keep it on the road and to remind people that GM used to know how to build great looking cars. Well, that PLUS its a kick in the *** to drive!

69Red Dec 3rd, 04, 02:18 PM I know cash talks. But if I were in the business I think I would consider the fact that an idividual has purchased multiple cars from me.
And if I treat him well he will continue to come back and bring even more of his friends and family. (you know how we car people hang out together). Additonally the 68 I would have traded in is a very nice car and he would have sold it quickly.
Oh well...Plenty of cars on the road.
Actually I'm getting over it pretty quickly.
Thanks again
thorpe67RS Dec 3rd, 04, 02:23 PM Wait a minute...i love the vent windows. :D
1stGenJake69 Dec 3rd, 04, 02:56 PM third time is a charm. That is why the 69 is the best of the first gen camaros. Two years of excellent cars, building up to the PERFECT looking camaro ever made. IMO of course!!
69lemans Dec 3rd, 04, 02:56 PM Sorry to hear you lost out on a car you were looking to buy.

Vent windows are still great in my opinion. Kind of wish they carried them longer.
67 Convertible Dec 3rd, 04, 03:54 PM Sorry you lost the car...keep looking, there's lots out there. I like my vent windows, give the car an older unique vintage look. And if you're a smoker...it's easy to flip the butts out LOL
Geezer Dec 3rd, 04, 05:03 PM The only drawback to the 67 is the smaller fusebox. As far as the shock mounts, I like the way my traction bar looks! Too much plastic in the 68s and especially the 69s.
camp07 Dec 3rd, 04, 07:00 PM hey 69red i noticed your verse at the bottom of your posts...just wanted to say AMEN to that!
mike shields Dec 4th, 04, 04:04 AM Wife wants a 69 rs then winks at me!!
69Red Dec 4th, 04, 05:54 AM Mike:
I'm not following what you are trying to say.
I tried to post a link to a picture of my wife's 68...I hope it works.
69Red Dec 4th, 04, 05:58 AM Since the picture link worked I have added the picture of my 68 chevelle.
On the team Chevelle website my user name is Grape Ape (basically because the car is purple).
John68rs Dec 4th, 04, 06:16 AM Sorry you lost out on the car you wanted. I think I'd let him know how you feel. He may keep it in mind and do you right on the next deal to make it up a little. At least he would know how you feel and how you expect to be treated as a return customer.
On to the "upgrade" issue! I have to cast another vote for the '68.
I also like those verses. Those and 16:9 are my favorite Proverbs.
69Red Dec 4th, 04, 06:20 AM Proverbs 16:9 I just read it and it gives me something to think about today.
Thanks John68rs
Buck Dec 7th, 04, 02:59 AM Is that how we are able to buy these cars. Buy them for our wives? smile.gif My wife (which I bought the car for) only wanted a 67. Had to have them there wing windows...

Hey, check out the picture underneath my screen name on the left, is that cool or what? Thanks Dennis, I just hope you get Danny the Donkey fixed up too!!! graemlins/beers.gif To me the '69 is awesome in the sense it is entirely different from any model. The 67's and 68's resemble each other too closely. My vote is for the "69
BTW, how the heck did you get that little guy below your screen name????? I want one too...waaaaaaaaaaa graemlins/clonk.gif
