View Full Version : 1969 Z28 Value?
grag Dec 13th, 04, 03:08 PM I am currently restoring a '69 Z28. However I have run across a pretty nice car. It is frost green with black stripes, green interior, console and gauges, all original sheet metal with a 14 year old bc/cc paint job that looks new. The car has a ce block that was replaced when it was 6 mos. old. I am trying to figure out what the value would be. I have not yet climbed all over the car but lets assume everything but the block is original. Any guess?
Thanks!
olympic69 Dec 13th, 04, 03:58 PM To me, you have to try to establish the authenticity of the car and its options, and how nice it really is. Seems like rock bottom for a driver is $15,000. It has become very subjective now, and really boils down to what one is willing to pay. If your looking for an investment, you must do your homework. If you want the car for personal enjoyment, then it is up to you to decide what it is worth. Nice cars seem to me to be well into the $30k and up range, but still a good deal can be found for less, however they are getting harder to find. I have found networking away from e-bay, where you can negotiate a deal without competition is a good alternative.
Cheers-
Rob
Gary L Dec 13th, 04, 04:00 PM $30-40K. Maybe another $10k to spruce it up depending on what is needed (paint, seat covers engine rebuild. Is it missing the correct master cylinder, shifter etc. It adds up fast. Just my guess. Or send it Hugger_Sixty_Nine for the $100K treatment! ;) Good luck.
grag Dec 13th, 04, 04:13 PM At first look it appears to need very little. I going to take a closer look. The car is not up for sale but he told me $29,500 would get it.
paulm Dec 13th, 04, 04:17 PM Personally I wouldn't drop big money on a car with a CE block. The green colors hurt it too IMHO.
If you want a nice Z28 they seem to be able to be had for 30's all there and matching in a better color than green, unless you like green :D .
I know a guy that just picked up a very nice hugger Z for high 30's, very nice paint, perfect interior and all matching.
grag Dec 13th, 04, 11:29 PM I agree that the ce block and the green hurts the car. However, the fact that it mostly all original and in great shape helps. I think I would do 25k on the car. I'm going in for a closer look today.
36j1967 Dec 13th, 04, 11:52 PM I'm not an expert on 69Z's but do own a car with a CE block. On many occasions I have tried to enlighten others of the fact that a CE block is GM factory original. If not for the GM warranty plan of the day a POP would not even be a factor for those documenting vin. stamped blocks, although some CE blocks were vin. stamped by the installing authorized GM dealer. My suggestion is to use the resources located here to determine the value based on the "sum" of the "whole" information available with the car to determine its pedigree. Very few of us can claim complete documentation of our vehicles. Good luck and happy hunting.

grag Dec 16th, 04, 01:45 PM When and took a closer look today. This is stamped on the engine pad CE0A20457. Can someone decode that?
Thanks!
I also noticed on the intake manifold there was a "W" with a spider web around it. Was that correct?
36j1967 Dec 16th, 04, 02:40 PM CE= warranty block 0= Some research indicates model year. I feel, as some others do, that it is the year of replacement. A= undetermined and not always present? 20457= sequential indicator of warranty block issued under GM plan. This would incorporate all blocks issued by a given plant not just the 302. It is not a vin #!
The W you refer to indicates an aluminum intake from the Winters foundry. This is correct for a 302 Z/28. In short the information the seller gave you about the block being replaced early holds water in this case. However, I would be cautious and continue with a thorough documentation.

grag Dec 16th, 04, 03:57 PM Thanks! It appears to be pretty original other one door skin replaced and it was painted in '88. I saw no rust. It had a BU coded rear. Could not see the numbers on the trans but I appears to be M-20 or 21.Has the 4053 carb. I will try to post some pics to a website. Thanks for all the help!
grag Dec 16th, 04, 04:07 PM Here are the pics. I welcome all opinions.

olympic69 Dec 16th, 04, 05:38 PM Looks pretty nice. Does the cowl tag jive with the body color, trim, interior?
Rob
clill Dec 16th, 04, 07:27 PM The engine compartment is funky. There is no cowl induction flange on the air cleaner. He has just put the seal on the air cleaner and then put the "rear" decal on the lid. Also has the funky "Caution fan" sticker that belongs on a Ford. Also parts of the fenders under the hood have been painted black when they should be green all the way. Just stuff that tells you the car has been fluffed. The grill should be silver and not black so it has been changed. I like the interior. It has the hole in the front crossmember for the front spoiler. Neat car that needs some attention.
grag Dec 17th, 04, 12:06 AM The cowl tag is correct. The surely needs some attention. It is pretty nice for an unrestored car. How much is it worth? I know that is a loaded question. What would be a steal on the car?
Gary L Dec 17th, 04, 04:17 AM A steal would be $20-25K. I think it is worth $30-35K. Just my opinion.
grag Dec 17th, 04, 04:51 AM I am thinking of offering 25k. He told me he would take 29,500. I told him I would not pay that and he ask what I would pay. I told him I would get back to him.
paulm Dec 17th, 04, 05:07 AM That sounds fair. Having the CE engine and the greens, I'm not sure that the value of this car will keep pace with other Z28's with more desireable colors. But the prices keep going up every year so who knows what it will be worth in a year or two when done.
grag Dec 17th, 04, 11:14 AM I made an offer. Will see.
olympic69 Dec 17th, 04, 03:55 PM Other than the ford fan sticker, I missed the other engine Compt issues that Clill picked up on- the fenders and the air cleaner, kinda weird for a car with tower hose clamps, seemed like the guy was trying...
Rob
grag Dec 18th, 04, 11:24 AM Jeff, you out there?
grag Dec 20th, 04, 01:18 PM Not looking good. So far we can't come to terms. We are 1k apart. :(
Gary L Dec 20th, 04, 02:38 PM grag,
How about other parts like the correct distributor, alternator, shifter etc.? Those are big ticket items
clill Dec 20th, 04, 02:54 PM I have solved those 1000.00 apart differences with a coin toss...Makes it interesting to say the least.

I thought too long about it (2 weeks), finally offered the guy 28K for it and he told me he had sold it earlier that day. I didn't ask what he sold it for. My point is the car was a numbers matching, 396 4 speed convertible. I think it's worth considerably more than 30K today.
I personally wouldn't let 1K keep me from getting a car that I really wanted. If you pay a fair going price today, chances it will be worth a least 1K more than that 6 months from now.
Just my opinion,
Doug
grag Dec 20th, 04, 04:25 PM I have not checked all the numbers. I feel most are correct. I know the carb is not original, but is a 4053. It is possible one of the heads were replaced. It is not my dream car, however I would buy it for what I offered and it was more than I wanted to pay. If I wasn't in the middle of restoring a Z and my ZR-1 was sold I would be more willing. He is not trying to sell the car so I may have a little time.
z28doug Dec 20th, 04, 05:32 PM Sounds like a level-headed, rational decision. Enjoy your '69!!

grag Dec 21st, 04, 02:45 PM What the hell! I bought it. It really is a very solid car I was amazed after a closer look. The car really shows better than the pictures. Now, what to sell. I put up some more pics.
angelglo Dec 21st, 04, 03:57 PM grag,

grag Dec 21st, 04, 04:16 PM Thanks!
grag Dec 27th, 04, 02:58 PM Hey Guys, I have had a few days to really go over this car. I am really amazed, The only thing I can find body wise is the right door has been skinned and the right qtr. has had about a 3" replacement around the wheel opening. Other than that it appears to be totally original and rust free! I am very pleased with my purchase. This car has been well cared for. I have the names of all 5 local owners. I just put up some more pics.
grag Jan 23rd, 05, 02:01 PM Update, 2 weeks later and a total rebuild of motor and sub frame. Ready for initial start up as soon as it warms up here. I got a new decal for the valve cover if I could just figure out how it goes on.

ChevyThunder Jan 23rd, 05, 08:41 PM Based on what I have seen out there it sounds to me like that was a smokin dealyou made on that car . Looks great..what's your address ? I got a car I want to send to you smile.gif !!
grag Jan 23rd, 05, 11:59 PM It is amazing what you can do when you are motivated. I also did it all by myself except for the short block and heads. I did cheat a little, The sub frame was already complete for my other Z. All in all it was a piece of cake. It goes well if you got the right place and tools. Now, I got to get back on the other Z. Now that has been a project! I have come a log way on that one in 4 mos. Yesterday was the first day since aug.1st I did not work on one of them. To damn cold!!!! Oh, send that car on smile.gif
Gary L Jan 24th, 05, 02:51 PM I like the color! Very 69-70ish. I know , I was there. :D
