: how to get a hatch to release?
86irocz Dec 15th, 04, 08:33 AM well my parents went to the junk yard this past weekend to get me tires and my latch for my trunk ...the thing is i cant get the new latch to come out of the locked position .... i dunno how it got into the locked position in the first place but im mad because it wont release itself and i cant get it to power up to move the lock back to the open position so i can attempt to shut the trunk and have it pull it down ...>
summary: how do you make a latch un latch itself if its in the closed position without the trunk being closed....i tried popping the trunk and that doesnt work either ...from inside and out
maybe a bad power cable?
novaderrik Dec 15th, 04, 08:53 AM key?
sicsD8 Dec 15th, 04, 09:23 AM ditto^^^^^
86irocz Dec 15th, 04, 10:33 AM even with power going to the solenoid to make the motor kick in to push the hatch up ...still wont do it ...it just ....sits there ...sigh it wont suck it the EFF down!! ...nor will it come back up so i can shut it ...i swapped back the old one till i figure something out ....at least its locked
BreathWeapon Dec 15th, 04, 02:15 PM So it won't open if you use the key? If not, then it is busted. I swapped one in my car and had no problems, but my original one actually had a broken cable, there was nothing wrong with the motor or anything. Hmm.. Those things are actually always supposed to stay closed, don't forget, and only open briefly with the key or the automatic button. If you can't close the trunk on yours, then the machanism is jammed. What exactly went wrong that you need to replace it anyway?
Just a thought, mine is a 1983, so maybe the 1986 is different. Is yours supposed to act like the Cadillacs where you just lightly close the trunk and a motor draws it down automatically? See, mine you need to slam shut like any other trunk.
86irocz Dec 15th, 04, 04:51 PM mine you shut lightly and the motor kicks in and takes it down once its locked into the lock mech. ... but the motor with the lock is in the down position ...and my dad never checked if it actaully worked :( so i think that one is worse than the one i had ....im thinking i just needed to fiddle with some connections on the old one ...i have the old one on it now because its the only one able to lock it lol
BreathWeapon Dec 15th, 04, 09:46 PM Ah ok, it is a lot different than mine then. It must just be screwed. You never know what you get from a scrapyard and it is really difficult to test electronic things on the spot. I got a few cruise control transducers from the scrapyard, two of which didn't work at all, and one that didn't work properly. It suck, but trial and error is better than the $400 jobby from GM, that's for sure.
novaderrik Dec 15th, 04, 11:53 PM is it out of adjustment?
BreathWeapon Dec 16th, 04, 12:55 AM I am pretty sure he means it acts as though it is dead, with no movement or anything. Correct 86iroc?
86irocz Dec 16th, 04, 02:21 AM yes breathweapon ;) .... its broken!! ahh ...my dad said when he finds time (which will be never) hes gonna see if he can get the motor to kick in ...but that wont work ...im probably going to end up taking a easy fix to the shop because it wont release for me
novaderrik Dec 17th, 04, 08:33 AM so, the problem is that the latch is stuck in the "locked" position, but the gate is open?
if so, try turning the key and moving it to the open position with your fingers or a screwdriver wedged in there where the hook on the hatch would go.
]if the problem is that the hatch is shut and you can't get it to open, then you might need to loosen up and re-adjust the latch to take the pressure off it a bit so that the latch CAN open.
doing this stuff can be fun when you are all sprawled out across the back of your car wedged between the seat and the glass like that..
i don't think i've ever actually seen a latch go bad- just that sometimes you gotta manually work them a bit and lube them up to get them to work.
as for the power motor part of it- can you put an older latch in it that doesn't have that "feature"? i really can't see the point of that stuff, except for having more stuff to go bad down the road- i had a Caddy once that had that motor go bad, and the trunk stayed open about a half inch all the time. it was a rusted out winter beater, so i didn't really care, but it was annoying.
86irocz Dec 17th, 04, 11:49 AM im leaving it for now its just annoying when you punch it from a stop and the trunk rattles like a mofo! hehe
BreathWeapon Dec 17th, 04, 12:47 PM At least the spoiler makes the air push down on the hatch when driving so it doesn't fly up, heh.
Scooby Doo Dec 18th, 04, 04:32 AM I love how he keeps avoiding "have you tried the key" questions.
sgthendricksonja Jan 13th, 05, 05:29 PM make sure the motor is getting power. use a tester light to find out. you could see about getting a new unit for cheaper than taking it to the shop. and i'm gonna assume, that going from the original piece, to the junkyard piece, and back, that the key has been tried. make sure none of your fuses are blown.cause if it's not getting power, then it will unlock, and lock, but the motor will not move. i have a 91 with the same "feature".
