ok, i have wondered about this for a while, and just forgot to ask someone. Ok, i have seen several pictures, and real life occurance where a guy spins his tires so much it produces smoke...well i am kinda confused. Because when i drive my dads suped up musclecar, and also my camaro when it was runnin...i could never get the tires to smoke...just a simple burnout. So to get the tires to smoke...do you have to have some HUGE engine OR is there a trick to doin such a thing. I will ask my dad, but i thought i would ask all you guys too. BTW, my dads car is VERY fast and can run 11s in quatermile...so i know it is not because of the lack in power. I am just simply confused. Oya, my car is an automatic and will have a mildly suped up 350 (i think most already know that), and my dads is a stick. thanks everyone!

back when I was in high school, a few years ago, there were a few individuals that would bleach the tires and smoke up the place on the last day of school...

toss a bucket of water mixed with dish soap under each tire then watch smile.gif

Might depend on the tires, too... If I dump the clutch from 3000 and hammer it, it looks like the misqueto truck went by...

Just remember, doing a 'brake stand' or a standing burnout puts a serious beating on the drivetrain and brakes!
Use sparingly. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Most of the mag and TV shots are in the water box at the 1/4 mile strip. I agree with Joe^^^power braking is hard on the ole U-joints and driveshaft.

i found with my 86 that you can get them to smoke smile.gif ....if you punch it and get the back to kick out and keep it so it never keeps up with the front ....kinda like a S movement with the rear end because then the tires never catch up with the car ...the smoke on that is pretty neat too because of the way how it looks haha

no power breaking ...just hitting it really hard from a stop on a slick surface ..or really dry ...really dry is harder ...i also have rally tires on my camaro

so i can do it with power brakin but, it is kinda hard on the driveshaft, tranny etc. Is it hard on the engine too when you power brake?? But it is much better if i can do it on a slick or dry (though harder) surface without power braking?? Also, what if i power brake it while in a really wet area...is that hard on the driveline etc? Because what if i want to smoke em while at a stand still...does that mean i must power brake??????

camp07
Dec 16th, 04, 10:47 AM
Also, about high stall converters...arent those specifically for power brakin or are they not?

How 'bout the old "line lock", which holds brake pressure on the front wheels while releasing the rears. In Texas we call that other deal "power jackin'" ( that almost sounds funny in a weird sorta way...). It does work, but not recomended as others have said. Anyway, my brother had a super sleeper Caprice with a 454. Turn right around a corner and nail it and it would light 'em up just fine. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I have only "smoked" the tires on my '69 one time. We were at a rally sort of thing and they would put water and bleach down for the guys willing to light 'em up. My car does not have posi trac so normally the right side is the only side that will spin. With the pavement wet both tires will spin and those TA radials will really smoke. Being 3:08's in the rear you can spin them up to about 35 mph, keep it under 3000 rpm, and make a cloud of smoke bigger than Texas! And this is with my 3 speed manual tranny!

Now my old wood hauling truck has bias ply tires and they will smoke on wet or dry pavement and make a heck of a lot more smoke too!!! It is a '77 GMC with the 350 engine and 350 automatic 2 wheel drive.

Here is the pictorial evidence of what my old wood truck can do:

Back when I was young and dumb, I used my mom's bleach and smoked them, in low and stomped on it it would spin all day...I stopped when mom started wondering what was happening to all of her bleach  ...Today I can do the same in the 69... (on dry pavement) but I have only done it a handful of times...off the street of course ;) Hey supv26, you car sure came out great!...looks good graemlins/thumbsup.gif ..Mike

Thanks Mike!! I am sure proud of it and cannot wait until spring.

It came out of the paint shop on Oct. 17th and I am going to wait until after the 1st of the year to put the first coat of wax on it. I keep it in my garage so it stays nice and warm and out of the elements.

The only plans for this winter are a new set of tail light lenses and park lamp lenses. I also want to change my fuel lines on the engine. I have a steel line coming off the pump but then have a short piece of rubber line with an Edelbrock inline filter. I want to have all steel from the pump to the carb but I haven't been able to find anything that will work yet. I'm still looking for ideas.

zuma
Dec 18th, 04, 06:37 PM
Why don't you pick-up some steel fuel line, a flare tool and a bender or spring hand bender and form it yourself? Use some solid electrical wire maybe #8 or #10 for a template, and just match it up with the fuel line...A little trial and error and your done. just a sugestion... good luck! :D

I need to get a picture too! Today, I tuned the new 406 in my 67 and went to the local test place for some launch tuning. This was the first time out for some real testing. From dead stop and stab the gas the BFG radials just spin and spin. The more they spun the slicker they got it seemed. In fact all the way through 1st and well into second (T350 automatic) Clouds of smoke and a lot of noise. I feel great. I believe I've achieved world class burnout status but I need to make it so it hooks at the track. A set of drag radials for Christmas would be nice.

supv26 - depending on what size fuel line you have, go to the auto store and pick up some 5/16 brake line, it has the correct fitting for the fuel pump. should be able to pick up the tubing bender at Ace hardware for a couple bucks. I bent my own replacing the rubber at the pump, bent it up behind the water pump and then into a 5" piece of rubber before connecting the duel inlet for the carb. Connected an inline filter before the pump just after the line clears the firewall. Ran the line up over the inner fender opening above the A arms then down, keeps the fuel cooler without the fan blowing the hot air on it and away from the headers.

Camp07 - line locks are a setup to lock up the front brakes only, this allows for the rearend to spin without the restriction of brakes. Saves the brakes, allows for a good burny to heat the tires before a race, also allows one to rev the engine up at the starting line while in gear and preventing forward motion. then at the light, you hit a button, the brakes release and your hole shot should be right there. Mix bleach with water about 1/4 bleach to 3/4 water. spread liberally before the rear tires. punch the throttle and watch the smoke come up.

camp07
Dec 19th, 04, 05:44 PM
cool, but when you rev it up at the startin line while in 1st with the line locks...wouldn't the rear tires spin as the do in the warm up burn out??

hey i have a GM third series posi carrier in my 3.55 rear end...is this a good posi??

Nantooch
Dec 19th, 04, 08:52 PM
Some what, but with the initial burnout the rubber on the tires gets real sticky, this cause the tires to grip the pavement and not spin. If you watch some of the footage from the NHRA you'll see the tires stick to the track when they stage. This allows them to rev the engine higher at posting. When they punch it, the tires are kind of stuck to the pavement, you'll see the walls of the rear tires wrinkle in a twist, this causes the car to launch forward and up a bit as the tire resumes it normal circumferance. If the burnout was good enough, there will be little tire spin at the launch and the car will seem like it was shot from a rubber band.

graemlins/beers.gif I just take them out for a ride and all is well. :D
That reminds of when I first fired it up. It had open headers and was in the driveway. It was belching fire out of the headers and was shaking every window in the house. My wife said that the cats jumped under the bed and hid. After we shut it down, I looked up the street to see many neighbors walking out in their driveways looking at us trying to figure out where the noise was coming from. :D

Dropped shackles on the back with Nitro shocks and Firestone air bags for load leveling and new torsion keys on the front. It is very low. It was already lowered when I purchased it but by comparing it to other Silverado SS's I think that it is 3" in the front and 4" in the back.

real cheap, real impressive! put 75# of air in your rear tires. they will smoke real easy. dont drive around with that much air though.

Ok, just my 2 cents if its a stick get it in 2nd gear and dump the clutch.

I'm shure this is torture to the drivetrain but its my favorite for really really smokey burnouts, as the tires are spinning at about 40 mph.

Sorry, Randy, I lost track of thai thread for a few days.

The rails on my SS are Putco's "Black chrome" stainless Steel. They fit into the stake pockets, tight enought to use for load tie-downs, and look GREAT on the black SS.

camp07 a word of caution don't try this in your dads car without him knowing, you probably WILL hurt it. Learn how in your car your friends car your moms car, Something with an automatic. Best of all ask your dad to teach you he will probably be happy. I'm sure if your dads car goes in the 11.00's it has low gears. You don't do a smokey burnout in first gear with low gears, you blow motors.

Your going to love drag racing

We was there at Famoso in october for the Summit ET Div finals. I went 5 rounds and then broke a pan baffel of all things. That made a rattling clanking noise in the bottom end. So I changed my dial way up, and tried to cruse and just beat the as he caught me but I broke out.

Hey Camp07, FastJack is right. Use your moms car....sounds like your dad will know with an 11 second car.....My dad had no clue when I was growing up, but my grandfather on the other hand (a master mechanic) knew everytime I went out...

Oh, word to the wise, make sure that there are no cops around...exhibition of speed can be costly....They will follow the smoke and the tire tracks right to you....

To get the tires to smoke, its either time or tire RPM. Depends on the vehicle/engine/gears. Weak vehicle, it will just take a little longer, but will take some "power braking". Gotta get em spinning and hot.

Back when I was in HS, I would just stand on both pedals (pretty much) and could get moms vortec V6 Blazer to roll smoke out of both rears. It would take a few seconds, though.

Have a 70 RS Z, 4.10 posi that will make some just off idle (a lot braking), but my 69 GTO RAIII, 4spd, open rear end (definately not good for time) will pour the smoke like Mccorry's pics, through a couple of gears. Have a pic of it, but no way to host/post.

I don't think I have ever had a car that I have not done a smokey burn out in (why do we like to do burn outs?), I have even gotten the wifes 98 5 speed escort to smoke em pretty good (sick I know). As far as power braking, you only need to have a lot of braking initially then its mostly just lite braking letting the car move ahead slowly. Most of your stopping power is up front so you really don't put to much excess strain on your driveline once you get em smoking. BTW best "sounding" burn out I have done is in reverse in my Durango with the stock Wranglers on it. Really nice howl :) If you have a problem getting em spinning try two hand fulls of sand in front if the rear tires on asphalt, just be sure to inch forward a bit so you get off the sand once you have em spinning and watch your revs! Oh ya and don't do this with daddys 11 second car. :)

I think its kinda funny/cool we have a topic on how to do burnouts.

But youre right Calpantera. Reverse burnouts definately have a unique, hi pitch sound. And its not too sick to have done a burnout in an escort. After all, all car guys pretty much have to try it in pretty much anything. Just for a laugh if nothing else.
