Dec 19th, 04, 07:29 PM As far as offsets go , they are standard I think . I,m just Building My setup right now . I,m doing the three inch thing on My convert , they are a bit more of a pain in the rear when you use thrre inch . I went with Borla mufflers offset in and centre out . Mark . CarlC Dec 19th, 04, 08:58 PM I have the X on my '68. It should be the same as yours. It's 3" with 2 1/2" tailpipes. Standard offset in will work fine for the mufflers. 69CamaroRacer Dec 19th, 04, 09:27 PM I have a full 3in set up woth a custom X pipe. IT is 3in all the back. It is on my 69. I used the old style 40 series flows and they are straight in off set out. I do not know if you have a kit yet but I have a 3in x pipe set up that I bought from torque tech I am looking to sell it. I bought it and then went with a custom set up so I never used it let me know if you are interristed. 68SSConvt Dec 20th, 04, 06:20 AM I agree with Mark and Carl. An offset inlet muffler is easier to use than a center inlet. Put the muffler so the offset inlet is toward the center of the car and you don't have to bend the pipes as much to connect to the muffler. Look at mine here www.geocities.com/hrayhouston/exhaust (http://www.geocities.com/hrayhouston/exhaust) and you'll see what I mean. (This is an old photo with FLowmasters. I later put in Borlas with a center inlet/outlet, and it was a pain to add in an 'S' bend to keep the mufflers out away from the driveshaft.) A centered outlet works fine. (Centered/offset isn't as important on the outlet as on the inlet, in my opinion.) Ray huggerZ Dec 20th, 04, 03:26 PM I am still trying to decide if I should dump the exhaust in front of the rear end or put tail pipes on it also. I think by looking at Rays pictures I will go with the offset inlet/center outlet, that looks nice. Thanks guys. Mark .L.W. Dec 20th, 04, 05:15 PM If you don't like to Talk to your friends in the car , dump in front of rear end , If you do , go over the rear and out the back . If you have Kids dump in front . Mark . click Dec 21st, 04, 05:20 AM hugger, here is pic of my custom bend system where it exits on the drivers side. Its not 3" but gives you a visual of when you dump the pipe between the wheel and spring. good luck with your system. http://www.brainerd.net/~knudsen/69RS/WheelsTires/ExhaustDriveSide.JPG CarlC Dec 21st, 04, 07:43 AM I've had them all three ways. As mentioned above, dumps can be loud. Exits just behind the tire are better but for me the amount of dust and dirt kicked up, expecially while backing up, was not fun to deal with. Exiting out the back has been by far the best for me, but it does take some work to make them look right. huggerZ Dec 21st, 04, 03:53 PM Maybe going out the back would be a good idea. My driveway is part gravel, so I would not make dust. But on the other hand, my dad has his pipes coming out the back of the car and they stick out like a sore thumb. Every body else thinks they look good, but I am not crazy about them. I will go online and look at some pictures. By the wat I think Flowmaster is discontinuing the 40 series. I called Summit today and they said they only make a 40 seires Delta Flow. The salesman said that they are the same thing only a little diffrent. graemlins/clonk.gif I asked him what the diffrence was and he said the Delta Flows are black. I thanked him for his time and told him I would decide later. Anyone hear of this? RickD Dec 22nd, 04, 02:40 AM Out the back is nice but you need to get them perfect or, to me, they look like a hack-job. I currently have mine exit behind the rear wheel and haven't been bothered too much with dust. But, that's because of where I drive. Jeff H Dec 22nd, 04, 03:46 AM Here's the setup I used. I bought the 2-1/2" tailpipes and headpipes from Pypes Exhaust and got the Hooker Aerochamber mufflers off Ebay. The headpipes were about 6-8" short of reaching the headers so I needed some short extensions. I went with the 69-81 style tailpipes straight out the back. You have to cut them to fit the way you want, but it's pretty easy to match them up. If you decide you don't like the straight out the back look, just cut them where they come over the spring and it will be a stock 67-68 tailpipe location. On my 68, I had to mount the tailpipes lower than ideal where it went over the axle because my car had the EFI fuel lines up in that area. http://cjcfo.fbody.com/members/jeffhansbury@comcast.net/68LT1/exhaust2.jpg http://cjcfo.fbody.com/members/jeffhansbury@comcast.net/68LT1/68LT1-30.jpg http://cjcfo.fbody.com/members/jeffhansbury@comcast.net/68LT1/68LT1-22.jpg |
