dschribs Mar 21st, 05, 07:32 AM kz1000ltd - I think you're right on. The winning bidder sells mostly NOS classic car parts on Ebay. All his feedback is from buyers, not sellers. I'm sure he'll have it relisted within weeks - with a $3,000 reserve no doubt. And if that is the case, it's the ultimate in caring not one bit about the hobby and all about the cash.
Sadly, for me anyway, when things get this out of hand, it almost puts a "black mark" on the hobby to a certain extent. Prior to this whole "investment explosion", guys that were into classic cars were like an extended family. All sharing a love of good old American muscle. People were into the hobby because of a genuine love of classic cars and the ability to keep (at least) one car, and a peice of American history, from being destroyed. Unfortunetly, alot of people just don't see it that way anymore...
I guess anytime there's a buck to be made, that's the way things go....
Very sad,,,,
wayner Mar 21st, 05, 07:47 AM $3K hood insulation, $600 rad caps and $17.5K crossrams!
I guess these are for the guys doing million doller restos!!!
Its getting beyond belief!
Brackneyc Mar 21st, 05, 09:04 AM I don't have an issue with the asking price...ask whatever you think you can get. The fact that 24 people have already bid on it is the crazy part. I plan to buy the insulation kit from Ricks for something like 20.00, which inlcudes clips. I'll take the other 2000+ dollars I saved and use it for gas for my car because I am not afraid to drive it. If I am going to invest 2000+ under the hood, it better result in some kind of serious performance increase. smile.gif
bilodeaulynn Mar 21st, 05, 09:53 AM I am betting Jim uses this as a guide to produce a "technically correct" repop. He has repop crossram steel hoods, and repop 12 bolt covers and is marketing the repop cross rams.
Time will tell.
A couple of years ago he got beat out on an auctioin for first issue door sills that had the little fisher body logo riveted on and some other differences from what GM had in later years. Jim bid over 2700 and did not win!!!!!!!!!!
Winning bidder was a guy named KenSS. I had sold Ken a very nice BB 4 speed cross member and a pair of perfect BB engine mount stands, so I remembered him.
I agree with Dan. Real car guys are the best. Now that the hobby has become so profitable for some, and people consider it an investment, you really have to be careful who you deal with.
mwh Mar 21st, 05, 10:17 AM It's supply and demand, nothing more nothing less. Maybe one day the investors will get bored and will move on to something else to invest in and give the hobby back to us. I am not too sure that will happen any time soon, but who knows? Musclecar prices have fallen before.
We can also look at this another way. If the heartbeat city guy does take this part and can get a better repro part made, we all benefit. But he paid his money and he can do what he wants with it.
I used to get discouraged by the crazy prices on ebay. Now I just sit back and watch (and chuckle). Every now and then you can find a new auction with a reasonable buy-it-now price. It's all part of the parts hunting game.

Uncle Tupelo Mar 21st, 05, 10:22 AM It is things like this that make me VERY happy that my car needs almost NOTHING.
On a side note...I do support capitalism...regardless of how crazy some people must be to pay for things at that level. Hell, I sell cars that go well into the 100K and up range, who am I to complain.
LOL
Gary L Mar 21st, 05, 10:46 AM Heartbest City is very proud of their stuff. He probably has a client that is already willing to buy this part for their perfect restoration.
Unreal Mar 21st, 05, 12:49 PM Jim of Heartbeat City is a very honest, nice man....but he's a business man. You can bet he knows about the "buy low, sell high" axiom. He deals alot with guys doing restos on $200,000 cars, so he probably has a buyer, or knows he will find one, to turn a profit.
I had a conversation with him at the Super Car Reunion a couple of years ago, specifically about the repop molded inslulation. We looked at Larry Christenson's unrestored Yenko, and compared his insulation to the repop molded one. The mold lines are more pronounced on the repop, but genrerally in the right spot. We surmised that the originals were probably more pronounced when they were new, since we were looking at insulation that had been on a car for 35 years. However, the pics of the NOS one on ebay do not look that crisp to me.
Maybe Lynn is right, and he's planning to use it to make correct repops.
He has repopped endura bumper jack load rests, curved neck radiators, complete crossram setups, and more. If Jim makes a repop, he goes to great extremes to make it technically accurate.
BTW you can buy the molded insulation for about $80 from the resto houses.....I got mine from Rick's (pick-up, so no oversize freight charges)
If you want the flat variety, email me, I've got one, still in the bag, that I don't plan to use.
Black69 Mar 21st, 05, 01:00 PM I still have the original ignition and trunk key for my 69 Camaro. Think they would sell. No really, one thing I do have is an original Camaro racing jacket sold by Hot Rod Magazine in 1969. It is blue satin with the red and white racing stripe on the right side and Camaro emblem on the left breast. It has a pen pocket on the left sleeve. I wonder if it's worth anything. You can see one here:

Sorry, go to Fotos, and then Fotos one.
PS...never been worn.

Unreal Mar 21st, 05, 02:07 PM What's odd about the jacket is that it has a patch of the 70 and later logo.
dschribs Mar 21st, 05, 02:10 PM unreal
Don't you mean "buy high - sell higher" in this case...
Honestly though, I understand what you are saying, but this one really blows my mind.
Even on a $200,000 car, shouldn't some sense prevail???? If anyone knows the guy that bought it and can get some feedback, I'd love to hear his reasoning behind this...
Unreal Mar 21st, 05, 02:17 PM I just compared my repop molded one to the NOS pics. The indentations all look the same to me, but the resin is very heavy on the side that shows, and therefore the insulation has a boardlike look and feel. Interestingly, the back side, which is molded to fit the framework of the hood, is more fluffy, like the NOS one. If they had just molded the repop the other way, it would look almost exactly like the original. I'm sure it was molded in a heat set process, so if they had designed the mold to heat the opposite side, it would have been much better.
Maybe that's Jim's plan.
kz1000ltd Mar 22nd, 05, 04:52 PM Wow, another one just hit eBay. That didn't take long.........
Another eBay hood insulation auction (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=34204&item=4537797138&rd=1)
Camaro_Kyle Mar 22nd, 05, 06:02 PM Yeah, I especially like how they managed to get just about every high-dollar keyword in there.

sci-flyer Mar 23rd, 05, 10:56 AM Looks like Jim jumped the gun on his $3,000 insulation. I'll bet he'll be going for the other one as well.
As far as: "Jim of Heartbeat City is a very honest, nice man....but he's a business man."
UNREAL, as far as my dealings with Jim, one out of the three is true. No way to convince me about the other two.

I will have to agree with sci-flyer on this one also.
Gary L Mar 23rd, 05, 06:41 PM This second one is not advertised correctly. Doesn't a COPO hood insulator need the cutout for the cowl hood?
Unreal Mar 24th, 05, 03:19 PM The first one was not cut out either. The ad said "cut out for cowl induction hood."
kz1000ltd Aug 9th, 05, 07:35 AM Thanks for your post, Jim, welcome to the forum.
tmannet Aug 11th, 05, 02:07 PM How about a $500 NOS radiator cap to go with the insulation?

Dayton68Z28 Aug 11th, 05, 03:21 PM Speaking of Camaro radiator caps, here is an eBay auction already past $400 with 4 days to go!

tmannet Aug 12th, 05, 07:35 AM That's the exact cap I was describing...must be supply and demand, although that's become such a cliche. If enough people are competing for a dusty old metal radiator cap, the price will skyrocket, which is exactly what is happening.
I wonder if part of the fast rise in first gen Camaro prices is that they still appeal to the teenage crowd, maybe more than ever, so there are 18 year olds bidding on Ebay for first gen Camaro parts and cars. My daughter (senior in high school) occasionally brings my '68 Camaro to school to run an errand (I don't let her park it in the parking lot all day!), it's unbelievable how much attention she gets. She told me the first gen Camaro, in any condition, is THE status car at her high school....maybe there's something about a 17 year old female with long brown hair driving a red '68 Camaro...

stope4 Aug 12th, 05, 10:00 PM I don't want to beat a dead horse to death but it looks like someone is trying to establish the curve on parts prices. And, of course, whoever buys will still say their car is Original. I wonder if Heartbeat will actually pay.
Whoever purchased this should just go to the blackjack table and place one bet. They could get a better return.
