In most states he could apply for a duplicate title if in fact he was the last registered owner of the car. That is exactly why the cash never leaves my hand until all the paperwork is in order.

First thing: NY doesn't have titles for 73 or earlier cars. Only a transferable registration
Second: I think only the current owner can get a replacement title. Make sure you get a bill of sale from whoever you bought the car from.

On the bill of sale get his/her license number and address too. Photo copy is even better.

No titles in NY.
I don't know why he'd say that he has one. Unless he got NY to issue one as a special case. All you need to register the car is the registration card from HIM, a bill of sale from HIM, and proof of insurance.

I sure wish Missouri was like this. In Missouri do not buy a car without the title in hand. It can become a big hassle in order to get one.

Depends on each state. I'd bet there is a way around it. Usually involves a lawyer. In Kansas, it's really really easy to get one for anything 35 years or older, if it's been off the road awhile. Newer than that? Well, hopefully you have some friends who can help you (salvage yard, car dealer, lawyer, etc.)
I just retitled a '68, of course I had to do the whole "stolen car search" thing, but I wasn't worried, it had been off the road forever and the owner was just too lazy to file for a lost title...
I've also tracked down former owners with old registrations found in the car and had 'em file for duplicate paperwork, or gotten a limited power of att'y in order to do the same.
While it's a pain things like this can be fixed, but be VERY VERY sure of the people you're dealing with (document everything to CYA), I have had ONE car taken by the police.
Sadly, it was someone who I THOUGHT I could trust, luckily the car only cost $40 and I recovered it (I can be VERY persuasive smile.gif ). But I had everything carefully documented and the police and "rightful" (I use that term loosely, they had an untransferred, out of date, third party title) owners couldn't accuse ME of trafficking in stolen goods, just poor judgement!

Thanks for all the great info.
1. The car didn,t come from N.Y.
2. The car was in the North West
3. I,m surprised a couple of guys thought the car came from N.Y. Thats where I live.
4. It was a project car,not a number One.Had it been a $25,000 car I would of flown out and secured the deal in person with a local Notery.
5. The guy said yesterday that he sent it.We will wait and see before moving on.
Thanks Team Camaro

you can use a title agency like new england title or similar...cost about 200.00 you pretty much sign the car over to them....and they send you a reg and all the paperwork to transfer it back to you through your DMV service..Don't know if its the best way but I have used them in the past....good luck Tom

This is what I will have to do with my M151, which was never issued a title. Hope that helps.
