: Engine Removal Question
68RS/SS454 Mar 26th, 05, 05:52 AM Getting ready to pull the 454 out (COMPLETE W/TRANNY)
Will an engine lift plate attached to my Aluminum Edelbrock Air-Gap intake take the weight without damaging the intake?
s4h Mar 26th, 05, 05:56 AM i never tried it. i dont think i would. thats alot of weight on 4 small studs tapped into aluminum. thats just my 2 cents.
jackr Mar 26th, 05, 06:27 AM No way I would risk that. remove the intake and be safe.
Pauly Mar 26th, 05, 07:05 AM I was uncomfortable just pulling an engine that way so i used a chain to the back of the head
ZZ430DropTop67RS Mar 26th, 05, 07:21 AM I use the carb plate all the time.
Just the other day I did a BB/Air-Gap with TH400 installed.
jackr Mar 26th, 05, 07:25 AM At least everyone is consistant. Like asking about the best color.

I fired off an email to Edelbrock asking them as well.
If they say no problem I'll do it but if they say they woouldn't risk it I won't.
ZZ430DropTop67RS Mar 26th, 05, 07:52 AM I was apprehensive the first time i tried it too.
I like the plate because you can raise the motor/trans higher with a coventional hoist jack before it runs out of travel, (because the hook is closer to the motor than chains can get) and it's centered side to side.
Put the hoist hook in the most forward hole of the plate to get the angle for pulling with the trans.
So yes, it's possible, I've done it, not just imagined it.
JimM Mar 26th, 05, 08:03 AM I'll vote for a 4 point sling with an adjustable weight screw.
Just finished putting engine back in with one, it's a beautiful thing to be able to tip it any way you need it with the turn of a screw.
It went in with the distributor (not the cap) and the hurst shifter (minus the stick)installed, and never touched or scratched the firewall! (and with no help, just me)
ZZ430DropTop67RS Mar 26th, 05, 10:20 AM Here's one I used a plate on, 454, iron heads, 700R4, Edelbrock Air-Gap.

novaderrik Mar 27th, 05, 01:24 PM the plate will be fine as long as the threads i nthe intake are in good shape and you use good quality bolts.
last summer, i put an iron headed 454 with a new Performer intake and a T10 tranny in a 67 Chevelle using my $13 Proform lift plate, and i am still here and in one piece to tell the tale.
once you use a lift plate, you will wonder why you ever used a bulky chain before.
Midlife Cruiser Mar 27th, 05, 02:14 PM I've pulled a 454 with Aluminum RPM Performer by lift plate without problems but I didn't have the tranny on it. Did use the adjustable screw device, that's slick.
