Did the cowl tags originally come painted with the same paint as the firewall? Are they aluminum? I recently painted my firewall and taped over the cowl tag. Upon removing the tape, some of the paint on the tag came with it. Im not sure if it was original paint, but there is primer under it that is definately on there. I guess I can clean it up as best I can and try to match the original paint. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, Steve.

I am guessing it was painted black along with the firewall. Can't be positive but I have another question along the same line to throw out. I'm getting ready to paint my firewall and am trying to figure out how I can closely match the paint line where the white exterior color and black firewall color come together. I assume the factory first painted the firewall then allowed the exterior color to fade over onto the firewall. Is this correct or do I have it backwards? Someone repainted my firewall years ago and there is a horrible crooked hard tape line. What would be the best way to fix this? Should I try to closely reproduce the fade between the two colors or should I just make a nice straight tape line a little higher up? You can see some of the tape line by clicking my link below.

The body color extends down a little onto the firewall. It's not a tape line, but an overspray. There does not seem to be any "right" way. Most are oversprayed an inch or so, but occasionally, you'll see one that was oversprayed a foot down onto the firewall. Since you don't know where yours was, from the factory, I'd just go an inch. Look at some underhood pics and find one you like. With contrasting colors like Dover, It will be very obvious.
Mine is Fathom, and is taped right at the radius. I did it before I knew any better, but since it's such a dark color, I decided to leave it alone.

It is my belief that the cowl tags were painted after being affixed to the fire wall.

They come from the GM archives, I've got half a dozen or so of them building this 67 Camaro. This one is being built at the LA plant.

Thanks for your guys help. I painted it with restoleum 7777. This appears to be pretty close to the original color.

And just where can i get one of those bodies like that. I know DREAM on oh dont we all wish we could find one that clean!!!!!!!

Do you know what date the photo was taken?

Probably very early in '67 production - that's about the only time GM Photographic was in an assembly plant; note that the Camaro is a six-cylinder with drum brakes. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
