: Correct grille color for my car?

I bought a 68 SS Camaro almost a year ago from CA. The car has not been registered since 1978. However, a portion of that time the car has been disassembled so some exterior pieces could have been swapped. I got a grille with the car that appears to be original and is the gray color. The car is a true SS 350 so that part is not in question. I read that SS cars had black grilles with the exception of some green and black cars which may have had gray grilles. My car is Seafrost Green. The grille is now pained Argent but beside the car it just doesn't seem to mesh with the paint and black hockey stripes down the side.

Can anyone tell me for sure if this can be correct for my car? I am going all original with this car and I don't want to be incorrect if I can help it. THANKS!

Welcome to the best website for first gen information. Mark, John and Kurt are like professors! Wade thru the BS in the post below and go to the CRG website (Camaros.org) that is linked. I believe that your grille should be grey. graemlins/waving.gif

Thanks Gary - I have been a ghost of this website for quite some time but am VERY IMPRESSESD with the wealth of knowledge I have read. Its a great site in all aspects.

Now that my restoration project is well underway I am sure you will be seeing much more of me and my car. Thanks again!

That whole discussion and the CRG link seem to reference 69's, not 68's, or did I miss something?

The original grill on my 1968 non-Rs SS is Black.
In a discussion many years ago with Jerry MacNeish he stated he belived this was correct for non-RS SS's, even though Z-28's were silver with a black surround.
I hope there some definitive answers on this - even though I don't think I'll ever repaint mine to silver if correct...

That is what I thought until I read that some green and black cars had silver grilles. Since the grille that came with mine was grey I assumed it could be correct. I am currently trying to track down the original owner thanks to the CA black plate to try and get some more information. If it was black then I am going to have it repainted to black.I think black would look better anyway.

I have looked hard at the old grille and I cannot see any emblem marks (ss or otherwise) of any kind. I do still have all of the originals.

I don't know but our 68 RS L2 conv. was teal blue with 327 and it has black grille with grey/silver horizontal lines in the grille. Orignal paint on the headlamp covers, so I know it is true since 1973 anyway, that's all I know for sure is the car we have.
