: '68 Camaro 396/375 HP question
Hulk will smash Oct 19th, 04, 11:29 AM Hi, I am cloning a '68 Camaro 396/375hp and I am ready to buy the carb and intake manifold. I am getting conflicting information on what carb is the correct carb for the car. I have heard the Holley 4053 is correct and I have heard that the Holley 4346 is correct. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Second, as I understand it, the correct manifold is 3933163 (again please correct me if I'm wrong). However, I have noticed that there seems to be a wide range in prices for this manifold and there seems to be subtle differences in the manifold as well. The most noticable difference seems to be the location of the Winter's Foundry Snowflake. On the cheaper manifolds, it is up near the carb with an arrow next to it. On the more expensive manifolds it is down on the #2 intake runner (as I recall). What is the difference?
Also, will this manifold fit under my stock (flat) hood?
Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Sean
Gary L Oct 19th, 04, 04:42 PM Welcome to the site Sean,
The big block guys can help with the other questions, but the 4053 is for the 302 engine. One of the best features of this site is the extensive search function. Many questions can be answered with out waiting for an answer. graemlins/beers.gif
Hulk will smash Oct 20th, 04, 04:34 AM Gary, thanks I appreciate the direction.
The carb question is somewhat intersting in that about 1/2 the people I have talked to give me the answer you give (302 only) and the other 1/2 say that the 4053 was used on the big 396 in '68 (along with the Z motor). At this point, I am just trying to see if I can get a majority opinion...
For the record, Alan Colvin's book says the 4053 is found on the '68 375hp motor, as does the local carb shop. You and a big block resto guy I talked to say 4053 is 302 only. So far I am dead locked.
I will search again for this stuff, but any help on manifold question (and votes on the carb) would be met with great appreciation.
Thanks!
Sean
DjD Oct 20th, 04, 05:06 AM Check the back of the '69 Chassis Service Manual. I believe it will show the 4346 is the correct carb.
Kyvox Oct 20th, 04, 05:30 AM According to the 68 AIM, the L78 used carb assembly #3923289, which is the 4053.
MacNeish's book also says that the 302 and 396-375 used the same carb.
36j1967 Oct 20th, 04, 06:13 AM I agree with Kyvox on the 4053 carb #3923289. 4346 I believe to be a replacement carb #? The winters intake with the flake near the carb is a aftermarket and will not be dated underneath. Keep in mind you are making a clone and both of these items, if you choose the OEM route, will set you back some $$$$.

DjD Oct 20th, 04, 06:50 AM My bad... I read '69 for some reason... Anyway the Chassis Service Manual has some great tables in the back based on year. Stuff like proper dist, proper carb and more...
Hulk will smash Oct 20th, 04, 07:10 AM Thanks guys! Again, very helpful.
I am going to go with the reproduction DZ carb, which is still $200 more than my HP series on my race car. I found a new-in-box original intake with a close date code... $950! I think reproduction may be a good thing.
Thanks!

Hulk will smash Oct 20th, 04, 07:11 AM Oh, quick question, where would I find a reproduction of the chassis service manual? Or, is an original on ebay my only hope?

choptop Oct 20th, 04, 07:57 AM Sean, check all the repro parts houses for the service manual and assembly manual. Plenty of them around and they are indispensible for reference. About $20-30 each most places.
