Guys, I would like to get a discussion going about trunk lids. I would also like to get members to post their trunk lid pictures here so CRG and TC members can see differences of the lids. Early 67 lids are what I believe have the most differences. There are stampings which have no holes and others which holes appeared or dissapeared as the years progressed. If you believe you have an original trunk lid, post the info here and a pic so all can see. This hopefully be helpful for us and CRG. I am posting mine first. Check these out from a 09C (turquoise) and 11A cars.

Just a hint that we try to follow for the dial up members, try to reduce your pictures down to around 880 x 660 and under 100K each. That also keeps the photos in the screen so folks dont have to scroll sideways to see and read comments. smile.gif
Sounds like a neat topic.

Hey Click, how is that. Better? I reduced them more for the dialup peoples. Thanks. Next time I will ensure they are smaller as you have indicated.

here is an interesting 67 03B 396 Camaro with a pic of deck lid.
I have seen some late 67 Camaros with the holes for spoiler

Isn't there a hing differance between the lids of spoiler cars and non spoiler trunk lids? I'd like to see those. I wonder if most folks even know this?

No difference. Just looks like it. I found another lid on Ebay for sale. Looks like a 68 lid. http://webpages.charter.net/k30ssrs/Original%20part%20pictures/68%20lid.jpg

There is a tension rod differance between cars equiped with spoilers from the factory and cars not equiped with spoilers from the factory. This is what I have been told over the years, so I can't say it's true but I have heard it from many people.

BTW;

I have a 67 lid in pretty good shape that I will trade for a lid with a spoiler in equal condition. I don't want to mess up a good 67 lid to install a spoiler. Condition of mine is better than the green 67 lid above, also better than blue 68 lid above.

No digital cam so no pics of my 68 lid. If Santa is good maybe later. My 68 has the original non-spoiler lid and it has the holes for the spoiler access.

Joe's comment about tension rod differences with/without factory installed spoiler needs clarification. Using my orig 68 lid as a reference....The rods are the same regardless. The only difference is their adjustment. There are two tension locations near each hinge. The correct slot should allow the lid to pop up a little when opened without bustin' your jaw.

Seeing lids without the spoiler holes got me to thinking that some of the tension rods may not be adjustable. Could one of you having a lid without holes check to see if your tension rods have multiple slot adjutment positions.

From my understanding the rods are the same. The only thing that would have to be changed was the rod location for more tension. If the end of the rod was located on the upper locating tab, less tension was applied to the lid, the lower it was placed more tension. I also know that the tension rods to wear out. The torsion of the rods seem to wear them out.

The lid torsion rods are not the same on a factory spoiler car. The rods are both the same diameter on a non spoiler/dealer installed spoiler car, but one of the rods is a larger diameter than the other on a factory spoiler equipped car.

Mark do you know the diameter of the larger rod for documenting sake?

On my car the large one is .275" diameter, the small one is .225" in diameter. The large one hooks onto the adjusting slots on the drivers side of the car, the small one hooks onto the adjusting slots on the passenger side.

Yup - same measurements on my original 02D spoiler car. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Okay guys... 68 no factory spoiler both rods are the smaller .225" diameter

I agree the adjusters are just that they are used to tighten or loosen the stiffness.. The spoiler deck lid (from the factory) will be a larger rod..I just went through this with my 67...I did luck out since my deck lid was factory punched for the spoiler....good luck installing the new rod! some pre body building exp. would be helpful... don't try it on your own you'll need a person the set the rod in place. good luck tom

My non-spoiler '68 does not have the spoiler holes, and both rods are the same size

Ok, lots of imput for 68 and later cars, but the rods for 67 cars should be same size. Hence since they didn't come with spoilers. Yes some lids did have the spoiler holes, but the rods were the same size. 68 was the year of the change for rods, since they were equipped from the factory with spoilers. Kurt you have insight on what I am saying?

Yes, since spoilers were not a factory option during the 67 model year the torsion rods in all 67's are going to be the smaller .225" in diameter.

I guess the real question is were the engineers smart enough to realize in the beginning of the 68 model year that the extra weight of the spoiler would require a change in the torsion rods to pop the trunk lid open from the start of production, or was it something they found out after production started and was a mid year type of change.

Great Mark. Something to add to our discussion. i.e to find out when during the 68 model year (if it happened) when the trunk rods changed sizes. My car had a spoiler added by a previous owner and the rods were strong enough to lift the lid and both of them are the same size. This is just an observation on my part.

Toyboy, are you saying that your rods are different sizes? If so, they musta been changed at some point in the life of the car.

I have the dissimilar rods on my car. Before I installed the spoiler, I had to be very careful with the deck lid. After installing the spoiler, I was shocked at how "neutral" the spring was.

12D-66 Norwood Camaro. This decklid is restored but I took it off while it still had its original paint and I have no doubt it is original to the car.

Here is the stamping on it.

(rods are the same size of course)

I can email bigger pics if wanted - just send me a note!
