I bought a 1968 SS Camaro new. (still own) It came with a trunk mat. In 1969 I took it out along with the spare tire when I was drag racing, now I was at Vette Fest this Fall and the judges said, "only 68 Camaros that had the deluxe interiors received a trunk mat" My car has the standard interior. (Z-23) Now I KNOW it had a trunk mat when I bought it. Any thoughts?

All though my memory is getting as fuzzy as my eyesight, I seem to remember the base 68 Camaro (250, 3spd floor shift, Ivory /Gold std interior) we bought new in Nov. 67 as having a kinda rubbery, blue green or gray green?, plaid, trunk mat. I drove that car until 1981 (totaled it). I think I chunked because it got torn up a bit and then I had to pull the drain covers out because I had a water leak in the trunk and it was trapping moisture.

I can't find the old post, but William told me the same thing about only the deluxe interior for 1969's getting the trunk mat. But, anyone could walk in to the Chevy dealer and buy one to put in the trunk. ;) It probably came in a box and the new car get ready department had to put it in, just like the floor mats would have been. Maybe there was a mistake at the dealer or maybe someone else was set to buy the car and had it added and then backed out.

I bought 3 muscle cars back in the 60s. All had trunk mats. (2) 442s and the SS Camaro. Common sense would tell you most cars back then came with them. Putting objects in the trunk would have easily chipped the splatter paint and would have made the trunk unsightly plus the noise factor of objects bouncing around. I think in most cases people find an old muscle car missing the trunk mat and think it did not come with one when infact they were probably discarded because of wear or in my case just for drag racing. ;)

The real great thing about this site is the knowledge that a core group here has about 1st gen Camaros. They have done a lot of research to reconstruct the Camaro database (thru mostly the Camaro Research Group) including options etc. New data points I am sure are always welcome. graemlins/beers.gif
