View Full Version : Need '69 Frame Rail Measurement

I'm hoping someone with easy access to underneath
their '69 camaro can take a precise measurement
for me. I'm mocking up the driver side frame rail.
Our original frame rails were toast, so I bought some
from a donor car.
I need to know the length between the outer rocker lip
and the center of the master gage hole located on the
bottom surface of the front of the driver side frame rail.
Go to the following link and view the 3.26.05 pics
showing how I measured.
This should give us good repeatability.

I used a tape measure, hooked it on the outside lip
of the outer rocker, located perpendicular to the
master gage hole center, and measured to the center
of the master gage hole.
I'm using the factory language from the diagram on
page 3-8 of the 1969 Fisher Body Service Manual.
The driver side master gage hole is located at the
intersection where Lines "G" and "H" meet.

[Who said we'd never need that high school geometry!]

If its not asking too much, could you also take the
same measurement on the passenger side? It'll save
me from asking again later. I'm thinking it should
be the same (mirror image), but want to be sure.

Thanks a million,

If the end of the frame rail that attaches to the torque box look a little different, it's because whoever cut the frame rails off the donor car used a sawzall and cut the end off the frame rail, right thru the master gage hole. We had to fab up the end using what was left of the old frame rail as a guide.

Just to double check your measurement, use the spring perch and see where the holes line up. I used mine when I installed my rails, and it was dead on. If you need something to hold the rail in place for welding, use the spring perch. Worked for me.

Scot,
I was planning on doing that, but my spring perches are out getting sandblasted.
The perches and mounting clips/bolts do allow for movement. How did you know you were perfectly lined up?

The perch was flush against the rocker and I measured the jig holes. Seemed like it went together really easy to me.

Stan,
I appreciate the measurements.
As a final check, could you tell me the measurement from outside lip to outside lip of your rockers by the square drain hole?

The distance I get rocker to rocker at the drain holes letting the tape ride under the frame rails behind the oval hole on the underside of the rail is 47 9/16".I did replace the floor assy and the left rocker but I think that is in the ballpark. If you need any more measurements feel free to ask.
