When using one piece or multi piece oil pan gasket, does anyone recomend putting RTV on the rubber timing chain gasket or not using the gasket at all and using a bead of RTV instead?
Thanks

IMO RTV is overused. Gaskets generally dont need any help sealing just something to more or less hold em in place til parts are assembled. I really hate to see RTV squeezing out on all sides on various components.

If you don't use the gasket for the front seal and try to RTV it instead, you'll have the mother of all oil leaks; the front seal gap is huge compared to the sides - not like using RTV at the front and rear of an intake.

Use the 1 Piece Felpro Blue with no sealant and be done. Clean all surfaces before installing, torque properly using mini torque ratchet, you'll be done with no leaks. Be sure to get correct 1 piece, dependant upon thick or thin front lip.

I used the blue one piece felpro. The directions said to put a dab in each corner. No leaks.

use some RTV on the front seal to keep it in place
then use RTV on the pan lip that meets the lower timing cover seal.
scroll down and see my post from a few days ago.
I had same problem and fixed it using the above procedure.

Thanks all.
Dawg, I did see your post, but I was not sure if you just used silicon only or with the rubber gasket. Now I'm not sure if the leak is coming from that seal or from this plate that is on the Milodon gear drive cover.

dawg- I'm still thinking that you have the wrong thickness of front oil pan gasket. You shouldn't need any rtv for it to seal exept a small amount on the corners of the multi-piece style gasket. You said in your previous thread that you used the same thickeness gasket as before, but didn't say whether that was the thin or thick style. I bet your new timing cover/pan uses a thicker style than your old set-up.
