The Purple wire comes from the ignition switch and goes to the S terminal.
You should have the black wire from the NEG side of the battery also, which goes to the B terminal. I'm not sure where that white wire is from.

Since its a 69, check to see if the heavy gauge wire goes to and is a replacement for the BAT wire on alternator.

This may be another path for recharging the battery.

I would suspect that the white wire has been spliced onto the original yellow wire which was connected to the "R" terminal on the solinoid. It's not uncommon to see these wires spliced, as they were near the exhaust manifold (heat would cook the insulation, and harden it), and subject to breaking due to poor starter replacement practices (leaving the starter hanging by the wires). The purpose of this wire is to send a full 12 volts to the coil when cranking the engine.

I don't think its Start Ignition voltage, as in the yellow wire.

I don't see any mention of what distributor is being used. If you're not running points, all you need is the purple wire.

Don't you mean the positive battery cable?

it is an msd ready to run unit...also i now have 1 purple wire (this is for the key) and 1 red wire (this has a female end on it). and 1 white wire (heavy gauge..that also has a female end on it and also is "hot" all the time

Whoops!
12run caught me.... it's from the + POS side of the battery. I just went off the wiring diagram and assumed it was from the Neg side since it's black. I never looked at the battery.

Apparently, this is a re-wired engine compartment. Check the color of BAT wire on the alternator. See if it matches.

With a female terminal on the end of the wire, I suspect it would be for accessory power, if it were for another OE accessory.

Any other aftermarket items on the car having been installed we don't know about?

All you're doing is changing starter configuration. Apparently, you've had this car for some time and what did the wires go to before the starter changeout?

Are you adding a harness?
Is this from the original harness, I don't think so?
Are these wires from the new distributor?
Are this wires needed?

Can you apply a lenght of shrink tubing over the end of the wire to insulate it and run the car?

i had the same problem but i also applied a starter solenoid from a mustang. Now before someone goes ape, lemme explain. The starter solenoid keeps from having constant power to the starter which 1) you don't need 2) is much safer and finally 3) it can be a good point to attach your power for a stereo amp without having 2 million cables off of your + bat post.
