With all the talk of the generation gap I was curious to see what kind of range we have at this site.

I figured let's see how long we have owned our cars as a sidenote.

Don't feel you HAVE to answer. I was just curious.

Me,

I am 34 and have owned my 1968 SS for 1-1/2 years.

This is the best site on the internet.

I am 31 years old and I have owned my 67 convertible for 17 1/2 years. It was my first car. I got it when I was 14 and my father and I restored it for 2 years. My Dad worked all the time while I was growing up so I didn't get to see him much so when we began working on the car the time together was priceless then and now .I lost my virginity in the back seat and met many of my best friends today in the car when I was a teenager. We started another restoration on the car about a year ago and it will be complete hopefully by the end of the year. I've had alot of cars in my life. I live for them and they are all for sale but 1. My 67. You can replace iron but you can not replace memories.

I just turned 38 3 weeks ago. I've had my 68 for 17 years now. Years ago i almost hacked it up to make a race car- thank you God for stopping me! My first Camaro was a 67 I bought when I was 16, had that for 2 years. Then I bought another 68, sold it 2 years later. Then I found this one, and I will not sell her. Good question!

Kel,

I already answered earlier (GREAT QUESTION by the way) but I got to thinking about this some more and you know.......

As far as hot rodding goes, there's really no such thing as a generation gap (IMO). The APPROACHES may be different but just the same hot rodding is like baseball USED to be, it unites and binds people together. It goes across all economic, racial and generational boundaries. It is handed down from one generation to another. There's ALWAYS been hot rodding!!! (Here is where you start to hear the theme from "FIELD OF DREAMS")

How's that for some heavy thinking the day after after Turkey Day????

Im 34, owned my 68 RS Convertible for a little over 2 years now. I owned a 67 Firebird with a 455cu for a year until my girlfriend wrapped it around a telephone pole back in 1983. Took it to a lot and traded it for a 68 Camaro SS 350 all original and fold rear seat. Got stupid and traded it for a 85 Honda CRX (in 1985).
I have kicked myself for that one ever since. When I turned 25 went looking for another, took me 7 years to find the right one!

But they had a BADA$$ 70/454 Vette, factory Hurst 4-spd, chrome sidepipes...SWEET. They sold that and their 71 Vette and ordered a new 84. Great Thread!!

I think I'm gonna like it here! There are quite a few of you whose Camaro's are your first car! Same here.

I am 28, I have had my car (73) for almost 14 years. I got it for $2,900 when I was 15. It was in pretty darn good shape. Much better than my sister's 69 was. Dad planned it that way, he didn't have as much time to spend with me on it due to his 14 hour work days. We worked on it for a year until I got my driver's license. I drove it to school when I had my permit with Mom passenging, then she would drive it home, and pick me up later in it so I could drive home. We went cruising all over the county together. I have very fond memories with my Camaro back then too, Mom and I bonded a lot with all the driving during the week, and Dad and I bonded while we worked on it on the weekends.

The sad part is that my life has taken many sharp turns and drastic drops in the last 14 years...major car accident with the Camaro, marriage, divorce, bankruptcy (thanks to the x), you name it. I have done everything I could to hang onto my car, and it was really tough during the divorce. I've gone through times of not having a place to live, so its been damn tough to find a place for the Camaro to live! My beast has been neglected and time has taken its toll on it.

Good news is that things are looking up, and I have a bit more time and money to put towards it. Hopefully in March we will be moving to a house with a garage so I can finally work on my baby. It's going to be a long road back to it's original condition, but we'll get there!!

I'll be 31 next month. I bought my 67 RS/SS in June this year. The Stroker 383 just arrived at the garage--looking forward to the first burnout(after appropriate break in time of course). I had an 85 Z28 from 86 until 92 when it got totaled--I wasn't even in it. I had hydroplaned during a big thunderstorm in McKinney, TX and was walking up the embankment of 75 to speak to someone who stopped to help. Nothing was wrong with the car until a truck hit the same water and also went into the median. the truck made one and a half spins before the rear bumper slammed into the driver side. The truck bumper was completely curled up under the truck. It bent the camaro frame and made for a really bad memory. No one was hurt but the driver didn't have any insurance. Half my insurance money went toward the purchase of my wife's wedding ring and the other half went to the purchase of an 89 Nissan Sentra. the marriage has been great but needless to say, I treated the Sentra very poorly. It fell apart within the year due to my impatient foot. I have waited several years to get a great car and am looking forward to hopefully a lifetime of good times in this 67.

I'm 35 years old and I've had my 67 for 3 years. It was a birthday present to myself, I stumbled across a deal I couldn't pass up. My 69 I bought 4 years ago and it is still not finished, but I have wanted a 69 Camaro since before I had a license to drive (notice I didn't say before I could drive, been driving since I was thirteen thanks to my dad). My 72 I've had for 6 months. I bought it from a kid who sold it to buy a motorcycle, he'll regret it later, it was his first car.

I turned 35 in July.I've had my '69 RS/SS 396 4 speed Camaro for over 16 1/2 years. I drove it about 4 months before I took it COMPLETELY apart in July '84. It took me 14 years to get it together enough to drive it again. It still isn't finished! I had a'68 Camaro with a 396, 4 speed when I was 15, '72 SS 454 4 speed Chevelle when I turned 16, traded it for a '67 SS 396 Chevelle, then traded it for the Camaro. I got started messing with cars at the age of 7 when my dad had me help him rebuild the 327 in his '68 RS Camaro. I've been totaly hooked ever sence!

I'm 59 (guess that makes me the "old man" on the board so far, although there are no signs of impending Alzheimer's); bought my untouched original '69 Z28 back in August - had one just like it in 1970, traded it in on a new 70-1/2 Z28, had to have it again 30 years later. Have wrenched on cars since I was 12, have owned about 75. Have done seven body-offs on C1 and C2 Vettes, built three Cobras, a tube-frame Grand Sport, two Hemi-powered '32 highboys, several other street rods, built and campaigned a AA/FD (Top Fueler, in the days when we sat BEHIND the Hemi)in 1961-62 which is still running in Nostalgia Drags in California, have had seven Ferraris, blahblahblah - certifiable car nut, new huge dream garage, assembly plant manager during the day, have my own assembly plant (!) to keep me busy at home. Wife is very supportive of my hobby (especially now that she has her new dream house attached to my dream garage), as she doesn't have to scour golf courses, bars, or bowling alleys to find me - just pushes the intercom button. Will retire in a year or two - then I'll finally have time to work on MY cars! Great board, great people - helps keep me young. Yes, I can still cut a good light! (Stout Cobras and Grand Sports run in the 12's on street tires!). Sorry for the long post, but I've got a long history! http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif

39 years old. I have had my 1969 Camaro SS
396 for a little over a year. When I was 19,
I bought a 1969 Camaro SS 396 Cortez silver with standard blue interior and 4 speed. I
built the motor with rectangular port heads, ZL1 cam, headers and 4.88 rear gears. That car would really scream! I guess since then
I always wanted another one......

I'm 30 years old. I've owned my 69 camaro RS/Z-28 (clone) for 14 years. My dad & I started a frame-off about this time last year. Have no anticipated date of completion. We work on it when we can. A lot of people tell me that for the money I'll sink into a complete rebuild that is done right, I could purchase (2) completed cars. For me, is doesn't matter as I have several motives with this car. First and foremost is the time I'm getting to spend with my dad. I don't care how much money I have to spend on the car. The time with my dad is priceless. The other big motives are the experience that I'm gaining and the fact that I will know exactly what the car is made of from top to bottom. My wife & I just had a little boy 5 weeks ago. My hope is that someday he too will be able to drive and appreciate this car.

Ever since I was 16 I wanted an early Camaro. I remember looking through the car mags and dreaming and when a underclassman drove one to school tha did it, I was hooked. Now I'm dreaming of driving what has been in the garage for over a year.

I'm 46 and have owned my 68 Z28 for 29 years. Got a lot of miles and memories from this car. I was lucky I didn't wrap it around a telephone pole in my youth. Got my first speeding ticket in it going 95 mph. Hit a deer at 95 mph going home from Laguna Seca races. The deer was the only thing I've hit if you don't count the wall to my parent's garage. I learned it's not wise to light up your tires while pulling in to park.
Oh well, gave me my first introduction to body work.

58 tomorrow. Thought I was the old man of this group until JOHNZ's post (thank you John). First car was '60 Impala 348/4 barrel/3 on the tree bought new in late '59, next was '62 Impala SS 327/300hp/4-speed bought in 1962, followed by '63 Plymouth, '64 GTO and '69 427/435 corvette bought in late '68. Then came kids and years of work. In 1987 got very nostalgia and serious about recapturing my youth and have since owned many great and fun cars. Current list includes: ZL-1, COPO Chevelle, LS-6 convertible, Z-16 Malibu, '66 L-78 ElCamino, '63 Z-11 Impala, and '62 409 Impala.

It is great to see all of you young guys interested and involved in these old cars. It is a great hobby! I hope it bring's to all of you as much joy and pleasure as it has to me.

43, Wife bought 67 conv in 1976 to drive back and forth to school. I married her in 1980. Told her I married her for her car. It's been "restored" 3 times. I've had 3 different body shops steal parts, etc... and go out of business while my car was still in their shop from 1987 to 1990. I'm working on the fourth now and have been since 1987. Once I got the car back from the last bodyshop I decided to do as much as I could myself so it was done right. Kids, time and money have all delayed this 4th restoration. Been compiling parts since July to finish. Wanted on road this summer but WILL be on road spring 2001. 78 Vette bought in 84 w/ 22,000 on it and it now has 32,000 on it.

Wow, as someone already said "what diversity".

Interesting results to this point.

JohnZ - you are the oldest (and I would say one of our wisest members).

Average Age: 36 years
Youngest: 17 years
Oldest: 59

Number of members in their:

Teens: 4
20s: 16
30s: 31
40s: 22
50s: 7

IMO, I think the low number for the members in their 50s is due more to unfamiliarity with computers and the internet than those who partake in the hobby.

IMO, I think the low number in the teens is a result of those just getting into the hobby.

Average number of years as owner of car: 7

Keep 'em coming. Hope my math was good. I have a BS in Mechanical Engineering, but that doesn't mean I can count http://www.camaros.net/forum/wink.gif

33 for 1 more month.
Current cars:
67 Camaro, blue- 11 years
67 Camaro, red- 10 months
70 Chevelle- 3.5 years
Previos cars:
68 El Camino- From age 16 to 22
67 Camaro, white- From age 20 to 23
Vega drag car- From age 18 to 31

The white Camaro was sold in favor of the blue one. Paint, body and interior was perfect, I swapped the entire drive train, engine, trans, rearend, front and rear suspension, brakes, driveshaft, radiator and gas tank, and sold the white one. Wrecked the Camino and got tired of the Vega. Also tired of the Chevelle. Will NEVER be tired of the Camaros.

The wife is also a 67. Maybe I need a 67 Chevelle???

for a little over 2 years. I've done all kinds of restorations on it. I blew a rod on my 350 on the highway; WOW talk about a bomb going off, POWWWW! I know have a 468 Big Block. Man, do I love it!!! Graduation gift from college.

My wife and two girls are moving to Mckinney
into our first home we are building out there. I've been wanting to show up at OWENs for one of those swap meets, but I torqued my 10 bolt rearend so bad it makes this bad whinning noise. Spun a bearing or something. Either pay a couple hundered to have it fixed or save up more to put on a 12 or 9 inch rearend. I've chose to save up!

Things I need to learn how to do or get done and future plans.

Mini tubs
12 bolt or 9 inch ford rearend
Fat tires
New rims
ATI Procharged supercharger (HINT: Procharged69)
All wheel disc brakes
suspension
SPANKIN new Paint JOB
Fiberglass hood
roll bar
Custom car seats
Stereo system
Ya know what never mind I want it all and
I'll never be done. I just love this hobby.
Yet its the most expensive.

Thanks

I'm 40 and I've had my 69 Camaro for 2 years. I have had other 1st and 2nd gen Camaros, a 65 mustang, and my prize was a 69 Z28 (almost).

I had the Z28 for only for 2 days. I was 14 years old. My father brought the car home to show me. He had a friend who was a new car sales manager for a Chevy dealership. One of the mechanics there was selling it. This was in 1974. My dad told me that we couldn't keep it in the garage for 2 years until I was 16 and had my drivers license. Here's the real kicker. He told me that with the dual exhaust I would have two mufflers to replace when they went bad. He was trying to install the fact that this car was high maintenance ($). I told him that's OK. Well, two days passed and the car went back to the dealership. I stayed in my room that whole night and didn't speak to him. Well, the summer I turned 16 we looked and found a 68 Camaro. The rest is history.

42 years old, bought my 69 SS conv in 1982 for $500, basket case then, parts now. restoration took the back seat to houses, marriage, kids. Lots of 69 parts cars in between to stock pile what I needed.

Since it will take me another 10 years to finish it, I bought another 69 Conv, 327 to drive this past Sept. Only had it on the road once to visit Jeff H. and Trezpan. Lots of driveline vibration, so back under the knife it goes http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

I just turned 50.
I've had my 67 Marina blue rally sport since nov of 66 - 34 YEARS!
I was a junior in high school and my Camaro was my first car.
When I first got it I would spend nights sitting in my new Camaro studying the owners manual by dome light and listening to my new AM radio, carefully setting the stations on the pushbuttons, and setting the front to rear balance of the rear speaker. I had swiped the rear speaker from my dad's Corvair which was the same as my Camaro.

When I'd go down town on a saturday night there were no other Camaros there! Everyone wanted to race me but I was afraid to do it, besides, the car wheel hopped like crazy and the Saginaw four speed was next to impossible to shift fast.
When I'd give frends a ride in my Camaro, they would remark "gee, everyone is staring at us!"
The car really drew attention all that first year...

I took my newborn daughter home in that car.
I ate about a thousand hamburgers and fries cruzing main street in that Camaro.

I learned how to change a cam, tune a carb, distributor, set valves, change a clutch. And hundreds of other things.

Around 1973 I started autocrossing my Camaro and working on the suspension. By then I had put a 350 LT1 in it with headers and intake and gears. But I wanted it to handle better and thought autocrossing would be a good way to learn more about handling and driving.

By 1976 I had flared the wheel wells and was running the Camaro on 10" wide wheels front and rear and had Goodyear road race slicks all around, four wheel discs and 4.56 gears.
The car would turn high 12 second quarter mile times around 112 mph and corner well over 1 G.
One event I remember with pride, was when I ran a local Porsche club event. I turned fastest time of the day for all classes, on a fairly tight course. I got a lot of slaps on the back from the pony car guys and Corvette drivers for "showing up" the Porsche drivers!
I was on cloud nine for a couple of months until a friend with a 69 Z/28 who usually came in second to me went to Fresno and raced a national champion 1970 Camaro (Gene Hanchett 10 time national champ CP) that blew him off by over four seconds! We knew we had a ways to go then!

I got my Lola T-70 vintage car running in 78 and drove the Camaro less and less as it needed work and I had no garage space or time to work on it.
I last drove it in the early 80's then parked it in an old shed out back until my new shop went up around 92.
My old friend is coming back from the past with a roar! It is going to handle and stop even better than before, it will have a bigger and more powerful engine, a five speed trans, magnesium Minilite racing wheels and wide sticky tires.
It's going to be a pro touring type but with a vintage trans am racer flavor to it.

34 Years and 155 thousand miles.
I hope the next 155 thousand miles on her will be as much fun as the last.

I am going to enjoy resuming my Camaro passion. But this time I'm going to do things right, not cutting corners like I had to do before.

I'm 33 years old and have had my existing '69 for about a year. Bought it on a tip from my brother-in-law and brought it home on a car trailer because it had been sitting in a guys storage shed for a long time. Changed all the fluids, plugs, etc. and fired up the 350 w/350 tranny. Engine sounded good but smoked a little and the tranny was shot. Interior not in very good shape either but the body is black (originally ralley green) and very straight and rust free (my main criterion) although it can stand a paint job. Current plans: pulled the tranny and small block, building a 454 and have acquired a good turbo 400 w/mild shift kit. Also have acquired '73 nova housing w/3.42 gears but a one legger. Going to go the posi route but am running out of funds and may just drive it gently for a while with the big block and T400 and stock one-legged 8.2".

Also owned one other '69 small block that was the "runningest" car I've ever owned. My friends called it the "Mad Max Mobile" because there was no interior and the body was primer gray (beware of this) but man would it run...and loud.

Excellent post...

I'm 35 and have owned my '69 for six years. Bought it with a bonus my wife got at work. See was six months pregnant at the time. She knew she was marrying a gearhead as I had been roadracing since I was 18.
I grew up with my Dad and Brother building and Autocrossing a '67 Camaro. Autocrossed it once when I was finally old enough. Then they sold it. I've been wanting something with real horsepower ever since.

David Pozzi remember a dark blue '67 with Mace Machine across the top of the roof above the windshield? Used to AutoX at Pleasanton in C-Production during the days that Gene Hanchett was the National Champ in a 70 Z/28.

spitfire44,
The name Mace Machine seems familliar. I only ventured to Pleasanton a couple of times with my 67 just before I quit running it.
It would have been around 77 or 78.
I ran against Gene Hanchett and Rick Quinonez, and Jesus Villareal.
The Hanchett car is the most unusual autocross car I've ever seen run. He believed in making the car as soft in the suspension as possible and made it work.
The car would lift the inside tire off the ground in hard corners and really transfered the weight front to rear.

53 years old. I was getting out of the Army in '69 and had read every article about the Z28 and was going to take stateside delivery on my return. Married,22, and going back to college it just didn't work out so I bought a new Volkswagen for $1700. It took 20 years for me to finally acquire my dream, Hugger Orange '69 Z,which we still have. We were fortunate to add the blue '69 Yenko to the stable three years ago. What a great pair, definitely not up to Clill's collection, but we really enjoy getting them out for people in the NW to see.

Man, I feel like a baby in here http://www.camaros.net/forum/tongue.gif

I just turned 29, I have had my 78 chevy truck for 2 years, my 77 nova 1 week, my 95 lumina 1 month, and my 78 nova that I am going thru now I purchased 6 years ago from my 16 year old cousin...he bought it with 53K miles from the original owners in perfect condition, then 3 months later rear ended a truck on a wet street and messed up the front clip pretty good. I bought it, put new fenders, grill, hood, radiater, etc and drove it for 3 years with the original and perfect running 250 I-6...then lost it on an icy bridge a couple of years ago...spun out of control and hit all 4 corners on the bridge walls and got rear ended in the process. I was so sick I sold it to my brother, who replaced the front end again and repainted it, plus added cragar wheels and bucket seats. I then bought it back from him about 6 months later because they bought a new car and needed the money. Now I'm going thru it from end to end and will be adding a 350, 383, or 400, auto trans, posi rear, etc. I am doing the interior first...nearly finished, and then will start on the body work.

Forgot to say that I have had my 67 for 8 years now, 7 of which have been in torn-down to parade rest and stored. It is now starting to come together though.

I'm 28. My dad bought my '68 for me right before my 15th birthday. We spent two years going through it and I drove it every day for about 5 years. I tore it back down and am in the process of building it back up again now. Never crossed my mind to sell it, never plan too. Heck, if the "restification" keeps going as slowly as it has been, my two year old son will be old enough to drive it by the time I get it done!

I'm 42 and I bought my first car, a 1967 Camaro, from my sister back in 1975. I was 17 years old at the time and I paid $600. My sister paid around $900 for the car a few years earlier in '72 or '73. It's a 6-cylinder coupe and currently needs another rebuilding (it's been through 2).

I bought my second Camaro in 1982. It's a 1969 Z-11 Camaro Pace Car with the 350 engine and automatic transmission. It's also a great car but it too is now in need of rebuilding which is what brought me to this web site. I'm encouraged - I'm not the only one with old cars!

I'm 17, turning 18 next months, and thinks it's fun to have a car that's almost twice as old as me (talk about respect of a vehicle while working on it). I own a 67 camaro that came originally with a th400 and 2 bolt 327. I pulled both, put in a crate 350, m-21, and have completely restored the interior, installed power steering, power brakes, stereo (the JVC Kamelion looks real cool cuz it has a totally black face so it doesn't stand out), and will be doing body work later in the month. A project that was supposed to last 3 months has turned into 9 months. I also own a ford taurus (boo!) and I learned clutch on the camaro.

Age is all in your head and mine is 48 and turning gray. My 68 was my high school graduation present. It was parked for years then my daughter wanted it back on the road. She didn't like driving the old beast but now I've got the fever to upgrade and restore. Had it since 1971

Oops I almost forgot (how could I?) I have owned two Camaros in my life. One the 67 RS, and two an 89 RS 5spd. w/T-tops. I beat the hell out of that one. I loved it. Someone crashed into it and totalled it while I was in bed sleeping. Imagine waking up to the sound of your Camaro dying. I miss that car a lot, even though the T-tops leaked (I lived in Seattle for 26 of my 29 years).

I am 44years old. I rescued my 69 ss 396 from my dad when I was 16, in 1972. He went out and bought an 67 SS 396 Chevelle, rag top,AC,8 track tape player. Unfortunately, the chevelle didn't survive. I still have my camaro,it is the first car I ever had.

I am 49 and have had my 69 SS396 clone for a whole month now. Great website. I had a 67 327 3 speed in 70 and and a 69 SS/RS 350 4 speed (loaded; wish I kept it) way back in 71/72. A lot of foreign metal in between.
Guess I am getting back to reality. http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

Well, I hate to be the one to bring this to an end, but I think our server doesn't like a posting with this many replies, it's had a bit of trouble keeping up to this one!

Thanks for the responses, it's been appreciated by all.

I'd rather not 'LOCK' this posting (doesn't feel right to lock such a great topic) so let's call this one finished.

Thanks!
