View Full Version : Which is correct for my car...
Uncle Tupelo Apr 5th, 05, 01:50 PM I am thinking of replacing the hood insulation in my car, it is pretty dirty and nasty. Rick's has two different kinds flat or molded. I want to put the right kind in my car, one is baout 20 bucks , the molded is about 79 bucks. I am not concerned with spending the money on the molded one if that is what I should have. I assume it is pretty easy to install either way.
Which one should I buy? I am trying very hard to keep my car all original appearance wise.
Uncle Tupelo Apr 5th, 05, 02:10 PM I searched this question and it never seems to have nbeen clearly answered as to which is correct.
Also , as to installation...I assume you just pop out the plastic discs and re insert them with the new insulation...is that correct?
Scott Taylor Apr 5th, 05, 02:41 PM The molded insulation is correct. The flat insulation is just a cheaper option for those that don't care about correctness.
Uncle Tupelo Apr 5th, 05, 02:56 PM Thanks Scott!
I assume the molded looks a little better also and will stay in place better as well?
Sorry to bug everyone on here all the time with my trivial questions, maybe as I learn more I'll be helping out the newbies someday!
Unreal Apr 5th, 05, 06:41 PM look for the post on the $ 3000 hood insulation. You can link to a pic of an NOS one, and discussion about differences between NOS and repop molded ones.
Eric Kammerer Apr 5th, 05, 07:14 PM What do you think guys? With that car I think Uncle has to pop for NOS insulation. Nothing like spending 25% of what you stole (I meant paid) the car for on a part.
I have Rick's (or whomever made it, I don't remember who was on the label) molded insulation on the SS hood on the 68, and it fit and looked great. Not NOS, but nothing on that car is or will be. It really cuts down the giant sucking sound of the open air cleaner.

What's funny about that is that the other night at the car club meeting someone asked me what I did and one of the other members yelled out.."HE STEALS CARS!"..LOL
So, is the popular opinion that I should get the molded insulation?
Like I said, I want to maintain originality as best I can.

Yes, you should use the molded insulation. If the current insulation is the original GM insulation you should try to save it. There really was a NOS one that sold on ebay last month for $3000. (sic) and it wasn't even in mint condition.
Scott.

I don't think that the insulation under my hood is original, but it may be. My only indication that it may not be is that it does not have the original plastic discs holding it in plae which would lead me to believe that either the insulation was changed, or that the disca wore out and needed to be replaced.
I did find, in a bag of stuff he gave me, the correct discs (the ones with the four holes in them)...I believe they may be the original discs. Is there any way to tell if the existing insulation is real original or not. It is not molded...it is just a flat sheet of insulation. It is not ripped, torn, or sagging in any way...it is just pretty dirty.
Uncle Tupelo Apr 6th, 05, 02:38 PM Well...I just took my lunch break (at 4:00 like any good car salesman does) and went over to Rick's and got my hood insulation. I got the molded insulation, and the correct clips to hold the insulation in. They advised me that this should be a three person job. Two to hold the insulation in place and one to put in the clips because the insulation is very fragile anc can break easily. Now all I need to do is find a few friends willing to help out.
Thanks for the advice and maybe i'll post some pics with the old and the new so in the future people can kinda look and see both .
Thanks everyone for all the advice.

What? None of those car guys at the dealership will help you out?
Shame on them. Real car guys always lend a helping hand.

LynnYeah, they can do it on Saturday. You know how it is....today is Wednesday, and I have the part....Saturday feels like an eternity away...LOL
HO69 Apr 7th, 05, 06:27 AM I don't have the ebay site for that 3000.00 NOS insulation, but if I remember right it was not molded insulation, or was it?

I think it was molded.
Unreal Apr 7th, 05, 04:39 PM It was molded. Search Camaro Tech 2005 on this forum for a couple of weeks ago.
Uncle Tupelo Apr 11th, 05, 10:03 AM Well, over the weekend I snstalled my new molded hood insulation. Only a few hitches, such as some of the holes not lining up properly, or there not being holes there at all etc.
Secondly, as I was told by the guys at Rick's, the original fasteners are crap...and so are the repop ones. They kept popping out but I think I got them all in and holding now.
Anyway...other that the very center one not going in at all...it turned out ok.
Just thought I'd update. Thanks for the help!
