Just saw this on Fox 2 news....They said it would run around $20-$40 a car
Here is what I found.............
Government Could Order Michigan to Bring Back Emissions Testing
(4/14/04) — Tailpipe emissions testing could return to Michigan under new federal smog standards to be announced tomorrow. The Environmental Protection Agency says hundreds of communities nationwide including several in Michigan are flunking new rules for ground-level ozone.

The EPA says the pollution-cutting measures are part of a nationwide push to lower health risks from smog. State officials expect the rules will require a 15 percent across-the-board cut in air pollution. No Michigan counties are in violation under the old rules. But at least seven southeastern counties and areas near Grand Rapids are out of compliance with the tougher standards.

They are announcing the 8-Hour Ozone Nonattainment area designations tomorrow if not mistaken?? We are looking forward to seeing what Missouri turns out to be at work tomorrow in the MoDNR, APCP, Planning Section....

This ratchets down the 1-Hour Ozone standard that several areas like St. Louis recently attained and thus became a Maintenance Area.

Check this out if you want to know more???

And go back to the EPA Homepage if you want to see what else is going on with EPA and Air Pollution Reg's....

Quote from EPA;
"Ozone can irritate a person's airways, reduce lung function, aggravate asthma, and inflame and damage the cells lining the lungs. It also may aggravate chronic lung diseases like emphysema and bronchitis, may reduce the immune system's ability to fight off bacterial infections in the respiratory system, and long-term, repeated exposure may cause permanent lung damage."

They just had an article in the local NJ paper about every county in NJ is not meeting the new clean air standards. But the biggest problem for us is the fact that all the pollution drifts across the country and settles along the east coast. They say that at least 1/3 of our air pollution is from outside sources. So how could we ever meet the tougher standards when the state right next door(PA) allows cars without catalytic converters in some counties and they can even burn leaves in open fires! Air pollution is a nationwide issue, not just state to state.

The last time they had this my county wasn't included and if they did this state wide 75% of the residents in Detroit would not be able to drive their cars, So I'm guessing it will only be certain counties again. It sounds like another way for Gramholm to bring in some extra cash for the state though. Besides have you ever drove through LA? I have never seen anyplace like that But, Cinncinatti has its days too. Nothing like that in any part of Michigan.

Why would the cars in Michigan have problems passing a standard emissions test? Do you guys remove your emissions controls or something? I passed in NJ on the IM240 test with my supercharged 93 Z28 and most recently with my SS454 pickup. There's no reason a normal car or truck can't pass emissions unless stuff has been removed.

I worked at a service station back in the 80's and we used to run those AET tests and you wouldnt beleive how many new cars failed. I had a Z24 that was AET exempt because their was nothing that Chevy could do to make it pass.
But like speedy-z said, Gramholm is just digging her Canadien hands deeper in our banks. graemlins/sad.gif

It CAN irritate, it MAY aggravate, it MAY reduce...
Listen, I am all in favor of clean air, but why is the government tightening standards with the reasoning that it MIGHT make a difference? More junk science, if they had any evidence that ozone is harmful at the current low standard levels, they would be shouting it from the rooftops!
It makes me wonder, what is the real reason for these regulations? More money from testing? More people on public transportation? Tell me, what was bad about the old standard, were too many communities meeting it? Sounds like self-preservation of the beaurocracy to me...

Sam - When I read that quote, those exact thoughts entered my mind.
We can also say this:
1 - If you walk outside during a rain storm, you MAY be struck by lightning. Therefore, no walking outside when it's raining.

2 - Traversing a staircase CAN be dangerous to your health. You MAY trip and fall down it, breaking limbs or worse.

3 - A meteor COULD fall from the sky, crash through your roof, and kill you. Shouldn't ALL roofs be reinforced to prevent this from happening? It just makes sense.

The point being, you can make any activity sound much more dangerous than it actually is. The "cleaner air industry" is very well ingrained and they have to protect their phoney baloney jobs.

LOL John! If I don't walk outside when it's raining, I may never leave the house again here in the Pacific Northwest! Of course, we call it "liquid sunshine"...

If ozone is really this deadly, then pilots should be dropping dead all over the place. At least those flying high altitudes on a frequent basis. I do know some of the newer passenger jet aircraft have ozone converters, but I think the problem is overblown.

Sounds like just another way for our new govenor to supplement the states budget with some more of her "fees". Don't confuse "fees" with "taxes".

Can you imagine if the law said "All cars from 1967 to 2004 must past the test in order to receive there tabs" I'd be looking for that 1966 panther!
