Sounds like you have it too far to the right. I have plenty of room between the fan and the side of the car. Maybe its different for a nonAC car, mine was originally factory AC. My unit is mounted under the dash but I still have to finish with the ac compressor.
Right now is a good time to mount that condensor stuff in front of the radiator and get the AC compressor bolted to the engine. Then seal that firewall panel into place.

In my '68 the fan sits up very close to the right kick panel area. I haven't installed the bracket that attaches it to the bottom of the dash yet, but it looks like I'm going to have to drill holes for it. With my car, I had to hold the unit in place while my son worked to get the 1/4 bolt that installs from the engine side through the hole and firewall insulator into the jack nut that is mounted in the unit. This took about 20 minutes of backache, frustration, and yelling at each other to line it up where he could get the bolt into the hole and started because he couldn't really see which way the unit needed to be moved to line the holes up. Once you install that bolt, you have no choice where the unit is going to sit, that positions it.

Here are some pictures of the VA install on Ray's '67. It might help from a visual prespective.

I am currently installing a system in my '67 convertible, and was wondering about how the holes are covered after you install the new unit. In looking at the parts, I don't see anything on the firewall side to make it look finished. I was trying to get an idea from you pictures how you did it. Did I overlook something in the kit? You seem to have a cover where the hoses run thru, but I didn't see it in my kit. I was beginning to wonder if I needed a heater delete plate like they used to make for chevy's with no heater up until the early 60's.
Thanks for an help.

Vintage Air unfortunately does not provide plugs for the old heater hose holes, at least on my factory AC 69 they don't.
Top hole is exactly 1", bottom hole is exactly 7/8" (69 Camaro Factory AC)
I found this place
http://166.82.96.9/pdf/stem_plugs2003.pdf
They manufacturer plastic and rubber plugs!! They sell the Plastic ones for 40 cents each and the rubber ones for $2.70 each.

I just went to ACE Hardware and bought plugs (plastic caps) for the holes. They snap right in the holes.
