The other day in Advance Auto Parts I saw a kit for repairing cracks & chips in windshields. I was wondering if anybody tried to use this stuff to fix scratches in their glass?

The product you are referring to is intended for chips and 'stars' caused by flying rocks, but not for surface scratches. Eastwood makes a glass scratch removing kit which I recently ordered and tried. Here is what i found:

1. Eastwood advices to use care when using the most abrasive pad in their kit due to the resulting distortion of the glass that is apparant after polishing. They are right. After using extreme care, it still distorted the surface.

2. Any scratches that are deep enough to be felt with your fingernail can't be removed without some distortion of the glass.

3. The deeper scratches simply cannot be removed with the medium grit pad.

4. The smaller scratches can be removed, but the entire process is very tedious.

5. Once again I repeat, the process is very tedious.

6. If you have one or two very short mild scratches, the kit is a good alternative to new glass. If you have full length scratches from a window being rolled up and down against a broken roller, this kit won't work.

7. In the end, I am going to replace the side window as the finished product didn't turn out as good as I had hoped.

Yeah, I have a buddy in the glass business and he says auto glass is tempered to hard to remove scratches from. His answer was to replace. So I guess that's what I'll do. Thanks for the input.
