Hi, I am in the process of upgrading my 68 rs/ss with a 3rd generation steering box. Checking Dave Possi's steering web page, it stated that I need a box from a 84-92 camaro with performance suspension and 16" wheels. A ink I.D. code HX is stamped on the box aluminum top or on the end plug.
I found two donor cars, but cannot find this ink stamp anywhere. Also, these cars do not have any wheels on them, so I do not know if 16" wheels were original equipment. The two cars are a 85 and a 87 Z28.
Is there any way to visually determine if these are HX box's? Are the part numbers listed on Dave's web page the same as a casting number?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Phil

You can't go by casting number, the same castings were used for many many different applications and ratios.
The ink codes were taken from a magazine article so only go up to the date of the article.
Z/28 and IROC/TA ratios are the same 12.7 to 1, but the Z/28 has less stiffness in the valving.

16" wheeled camaros will say IROC on them on them just below the doors and rear bumper. They also have a special reinforcement rod that attaches to the four front sway bar bolts, the bar runs parallel to the ft sway bar.

The Z/28 box is fast and has a pretty stiff feel, I actually like the Z/28 stiffness better.

Is the PS oil cooler line typical of those boxes also?

ORENCH,
I owned an 85 Z/28, and an 89 IROC, they both had a loop of plain steel PS tube running along the antiroll bar area and back.

Yep, I mentioned it cause the 89 T/A I removed my F/R box had that loop of fluid line running across the front of the car. BTW, still have it laying around somewhere.
