: Glove box latch spins

Hi,

69 Camaro - The chrome knob on my glove box spins freely which won't allow you to open the box without a screwdriver, can opener, or key. It also rattles while driving - almost more annoying. Is there some way to tighten up the exterior knob? How do you get the lock set off the glove box door?

Thanks!

John

Do a search as far as removing the lock cylinder. For the chrome latch? Yiou can check it for damage when the cylinder is out. Chances are it has something broken that fits into the release mechanism. Using the info from the search, teh cylinder will come out, it just takes some fiddling.

Hey thanks - I did the search and think I've got the program for removing the lock.

Hey X33 D80,

My mistake. I read a post yesterday that talked about when the key was in the lock box it would expose a tab or tumbler that you could push in to release the lock mechanism from the housing. Also a while back I remember reading that someone had inserted a paper clip wire into one of the spaces in the lock housing to seperate it. With this limited and vague information I thought I would be smart enought to figure it out. I spent two hours last night trying and needless to say the unit is still in place. I'm going to visit a locksmith and I'll let you know if I find out any tricks.

Best,

John

John-

Did you learn any new tricks? I was looking at mine again this evening and don't see any available holes to poke in, or buttons to push. On top of that, I don't have a key for the lock in the glove box. I bought a new lock and don't know how to remove the old one.

HI,

I talked to a locksmith last week. He seemed familiar with the problem and said he could put in a new lock but it was tricky process. (could be what keeps him in business) I'll try to look over his shoulder and see if I can learn anything. Out of town for a week so I won't be going to the locksmith for awhile.

Best,

John

I lost patience with mine, and "fiddled" it out with a drill. Got my glove box back from the painter yesterday, (he only had it 3 1/2 years) so I'm ready to install the new lock. Also got my Endura back, so my paint job is officially completed.

I had better keep my honest job.... I have tried for several evenings to pick that glovebox lock so that I could remove it, but I can't crack it. Since plan "A" didn't work, I guess that I should resort to plan "B" and get out the electric drill.
From which end of the lock do you start drilling?

Well a 1/4" drill bit was all the master key that I needed. I can now finish preparing the glove box door for painting.
A big thank you to everyone for their help.
