a friend of mine is building a 57 chev pickup. he has installed a camaro front end with power steering. when you start it up the steering wheel jerks to right all by its self so hard it would take your shoulder out of its socket.t any thoughts?

I assume that the steering column is in good shape and connects to the steering gear with no binding.
Did he install the Camaro integral power gear (i.e. the power steering hoses go right into the gear housing) or did he keep the old control valve and adapter power steering with a separate booster cylinder attached to the linkage?
It sure sounds like he has the old system and the control valve needs balancing. The following links to the paper and the two scans from the Chevrolet Shop Manual describe the procedure.

If he has the Camaro integral power gear, he needs a new gear. I don't know of any practical way to fix an integral gear that has the problem described.

is it possible that the hoses were put on backwards?

If you have the control valve and adapter type power steering, it might be possible to interchange the hoses from the control valve to the assist cylinder.
If you have an integral power steering gear and are using production like hoses, they won't interchange because the return port on the gear (nearest the input shaft) and the pressure port on the gear (nearest the aluminum side cover) are different sizes.
It would help if you would try and answer my questions posted yesterday. If you have a problem with the terms, just ask.
