View Full Version : Tire Rub/Front Drivers Side

I have a 68 and am experiencing tire rub against the frame when the wheel is turned (hits frame on left turn/within 1/8 inch on right turn). This only happens on the drivers side as I have more clearance on the passenger side. I run BF Goodrich P235/60R15 on the front. Car has power steering.

This seems to be a fairly recent problem in that I have had these tires on for a couple of years but the problem has only started within the last six months or so. Only change to the front end during this time is that I removed the front sway bar.

Any idea why I would have rub only on one side and/or why there is more clearance on the passenger side than on the drivers side?

Thanks in advance

Desert,

Both dvr and pass should have the same clearance. I have a hard time understanding what "within 1/8 inch on right turn" means. A little more detail would help greatly. Does it hit turining into the driveway, slow turns, fast turns ... How hard does it hit the frame?

It's not unusual for these old cars to be a lil off-center, front or rear....

the back of the tire rubbing the sub on a hard turn is what happens when the tire is too big, or you have a lil too much b/s. A 235 is pretty near the edge if everything isn't perfect.

Solutions include wheels with different b/s, or thin spacers if you have the room to the outside. You could also limit the steering a lil. Our cars have hard stops on the back of the lower a-arm. If you drilled a hole in the face of the stop and ran in a short self tapping bolt the thickness of the head would limit the steering a lil. Since it started when you took off the swaybar, you could put it back. If you took anything else on the front end apart when you took the bar off, an alignment would be a good idea.

Or you could just ignore it. I had a lowered 67 years ago, with 235 tires on 7" rims. Had to curl the lip on the outside to get the tires outa the fenders, both sides rubbed the sub at full lock, never hurt nothing tho, just had a shiny line on the sub.

I had a similar issue when I got my 68. Couldn't figure it out! Then, as I was checking the subframe for possible damage I noticed the subframe was out of alignment. I was adding subframe connectors anyway, so it seemed like a good time to do it. Once the subframe was aligned, no more problems.
Just a thought...hope it helps.
Good luck.
