I had the drivers side door panel off my '68 yesterday and I noticed that the roller that runs inside the channel at the back off the door (opposite from the hinges) is extremely loose. I tired to remove the roller from the assembly that is attached to the window but didn't have any luck. It "looks" as though the roller stud is threaded and has a nut on the back. I didn't take the door glass out (yet) to get a good look at so I really couldn't tell if the roller is rivited in or held in by a nut. Is it possible to remove just the roller or do I need to replace the whole assembly that is attached to the window?

This is the part I am talking about:

if you are talking about the little plastic roller, then, yes it is pressed in on the stud. you can get replacement ones from year one or maybe Ricks.

I bought one from a dealership from a '66 impala... now that already had the stud in it, so with work... ie. boiling the part and punching out the stud, it is the exact same part... just with a stud. cost me $3.00 i think.

Yes, I am talking about the roller. The stud that connects to the roller appears to be threaded and feels like there is a nut on the back of it that holds the stud in. Is that the way they are or does mine already have a replacement roller/stud on in? The stud itself is what has the play in it - not the roller. It's seems like it would be tight if I tightened up the nut in back of the stud but I can seem to get to it or tighten it.

you'll probably have to remove the assembly/window to get at the nut.

Is the window hard to roll up or down? chances are the plastic roller is seized.

I'm thinking that the assembly has to come off to get to the nut as well. It's not the roller that is the problem, it's actually the stud. The roller assmbly doesn't sit flush against the "bracket" because it seems the nut on the back of the stud is loose - and consequently there is some serious play with the stud inside the hole. I'm just wondering if I can replace just the roller or does the whole assembly that attaches to the window have to be replaced????
