Well I have had the interior out and decided to fix both the fuel gauge and the speedo. I have found the problem with the fuel but have come to a road block with the speedo.

The problem. 1st part, last summer and since I have gotten the car the speedo bounces, sometime staying stable but reading 10 miles slow. mostly just bounces.

2nd part, I took cable out of housing and cleaned it then put cable grease on it, reinstalled put into speedo, put gear on the other end stuck a drill on it and was able to get the speedo to hold at 25 35 45 55 and so on, no bouncing. Put the darn thing in the tranny and drove it. NOTHING!! No bouncing no reading NOTHING!

what is problem? More grease needed, I am confused because it worked fine with a drill on it. Is that not the proper way to determine if gauge is bad? Could it be that it does not grab the gear in the tranny? Any and all suggestions will be tested, I want to believe the gauge is fine, but if it isn't I need to change it now, because I do not want to fight that gauge cluster any more!

Notes: tranny is not original but believed to be th350 out of 80' chevy

Look at the speedo-gear that goes in the tranny ...Sometimes, as they wear, they will sort of round out and not grip the cable ... You may just need to replace that gear ...cheap and easy ....

Thanks, I put a drill on the gear with it on the cable and got good response, is it possible that the gear in the tranny needs replaced?

oh, I misunderstood that you were turning gear in drill ... You need to take a look in the tranny hole to see if inside gear is in correct position ... if the inside gear is "moving", then that would also explain why your speedo bounces and now is not reading at all ... You may be able to use a mirror to look in hole if you have to crawl under car ...

Ok

If the gear is moving, how do I remedy that? Take tranny pan off?

I don't think I can get my finger in there to do anything helpful.

I don't think I have a drain on the tranny, if that is true then is it going to be messy taking the tranny pan off?

Thanks for the help :hurray:

It shouldn't move ... You have to determine why it is moving if that is the case. I think this link will help explain how to service the gear ...
