View Full Version : Help me pick out some wheels..pleease!
ChevyThunder Feb 17th, 05, 09:08 PM The RS I got a few weeks ago has some centerlines with big fat tires in the rear and skinnys up front...first thing I want to do is get some nice looking tires and wheels on this car and get a lower stance on it.I have narrowed it down to these two styles. The first picture is the traditional TT wheel and the other is a version of a halibrand. We know and love the Torque Thrust style and that is the way I was going to go until I saw this other wheel.I like this wheel a lot but is it right for a 69 Camaro?I welcome any feed back

smits67 Feb 18th, 05, 01:21 AM Big N skinnys like these? http://community.webshots.com/user/smits67
I like the top picture (first one) best. That would look really good on a camaro.
Chris
67 Convertible Feb 18th, 05, 01:32 AM I like the first one also. More of the vintage Cragar SS look.
Rocketrod Feb 18th, 05, 01:54 AM I like the first one also.
zuma Feb 18th, 05, 03:20 AM Van, I agree, go with the first one, the other one looks like it belongs on Eleanor.... ;) smile.gif
George1968327 Feb 18th, 05, 03:28 AM I thought about the second one. I like them but they do look like they belong on a F$%*! (GT40 or a Cobra). I'd love to see them on a 'maro though...
Uncle Tupelo Feb 18th, 05, 03:47 AM I like the first one.
DjD Feb 18th, 05, 04:37 AM Hi Van - Assuming from the pic's the 1st one isn't a 15" wheel - the stance you want would be the deciding factor for me. Even in 17's the first one would look best just a bit lower than stock (a slight PT influence with that classic day 2 look). If you are going with the second it should be as low as you can go and still drive it (full PT effect).
Get the most sidewall you can (45's, maybe 50 series) with the first and maybe 18's and 35's or 40's with the second...
Mister G Feb 18th, 05, 04:53 AM First is my choice only because that is where I am headed with mine................the second has "Fix Or Repair Daily" written all over it.....just my opinion
sicsD8 Feb 18th, 05, 05:22 AM ChevyThunder-
Do you want to be a follower or a leader?? Do you want your car to look like every other G-ride at the show or want it to have a unique look that doesn't look like every other 1st gen on e-bay? Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the look of the Torque Thrust wheels, but they are the most over-used aftermarket modification I have seen in the last ten years! Yeah, they have a timeless classic look similar to cragar SS's, Which I also love, but they've been way over-exposed the last couple years. They just don't make me look twice anymore.
(To all others, especially those who currently own or just ordered new 17" Torque Thrusts, The previous statement happen to be my very own personal opinion. Please give youself time to digest all statements before hitting the reply button!!! There is nothing wrong with your wheels or the look of your vehicle.)
Jeff H Feb 18th, 05, 05:37 AM Wheels are really tough to pick out because it's such a personal modification. Size, style, price, the look. I agree that everyone has thrown the newer TT's on their cars, but that's probably because it's a nice look for not too much $$$. When you get into billet and custom wheels, most people can't throw $2-3K out for wheels. I would go with the top wheel over the bottom one. But it really depends on what size, width you plan on running.
camaroman7d Feb 18th, 05, 06:28 AM Well since you asked for opinions. I don't really care for either of the wheels you listed. As with paint/color, wheels are very much in the eye of the beholder. I personally like the fatties and skinnies but, it depends on the theme of the car. If you are after the "g" machine look then fatties and skinnies don't work. You really didn't give enough info for anyone to give you an educated opinion. What size wheels are you looking at? What color is the car? Spoilers or not? What will the stance be like? How wide?, all these things influence the wheel choice. I know most people don't get that deep into it but, that's the difference between a car that looks bolted together and a car that looks like art.
The first wheel is "played out". The original was even over used.
The second wheel does not fit any Camaro I have ever seen (any generation) knock-offs and Camaros do not go together.
I would have never said a word if you didn't ask for opinions. After all it is your car and you have to look at it and drive it, so what you like is ALL that really matters.
Dutch69Camar Feb 18th, 05, 06:43 AM I kinda agree with camaroman7d, but if I had to choose it would be the first ones. Pretty common on Camaros, but they do look good...
bbd564 Feb 18th, 05, 07:10 AM Have you considered the dark spoke Torq Thrust II's? They are basically custom made wheels, you can pick widths and custom back spacing. I can link you over there if interested. Also, bought GT-40's (thats the wheel you refer to as the Halibrand) from a member here and I have some pictures of that on a 68, which I can email to you, if interested and give you a lead direct to the guy who makes them. I think this guy also makes a replica wheel of what Smokey Yunick ran on his 68 which I could be interested in for myself. I could show you pics of that and if interested it might be cheaper to group production of 8 wheels together rather than 4.
ChevyThunder Feb 18th, 05, 07:15 AM I appreciate and agree with all the feed back. I know the second wheel is a Cobra style wheel. I think the Eleanor comment put into proper perspective. I love the TT but as has been said, If your not running rally's then usually it is a TT..I do love the look. I was just trying to be different. The car is an original X33 RS Z...here are some pictures. All I have done since this picture is remove the window tint and put the front Z emblem in the correct spot. It is obviously a non-original color..was Hugger orange. I do think the Torque Thrusts would look good w/ this color. It has centerlines on it with 295/15s on the rear. I am going to use a 17x8 with a 245/45 w/ 4.75" of backspace in front and a 17X9.5 with 5.5" of back space in the rear and a 275/40 . I am going with the 17's because I can run larger tires. I have confirmed these sizes with a few people.

ChevyThunder Feb 18th, 05, 07:27 AM Also..the mirrors have to go I think..here is a picture of the car in 1982 after the first non-original color repaint...that be Candy Apple red:) That's the original owners Mom in the background..pictures from 1982..when I called their place of business to thank them for the picture she answered the phone..I had to ask if it was her in the picture..she said yes..then I told her "you looked HOT BABY!" She was a good sport and laughed .
The owner just emailed me that he found pictures of the car when it was the original color and that he sent them to me.Nice people.
BBD564..post some pictures..I would be interested in any feedback and suggestions

sicsD8 Feb 18th, 05, 07:31 AM Nice looking car. I agree it needs something different. The rears are sticking out of the wheelwells, a no-no. With the paint, you almost have to go with a custom wheel. No need to put factory wheels back on unless you are going to go factory color too.
camaroman7d Feb 18th, 05, 07:39 AM OK Now after looking at the pictures I think the TT's would look better. I also don't fault you for wanting to change the wheels (those are not exactly fatties and skinnies and the rear back spacing is not appealing to the 69 1/4 panels, the wheels should have had mor back spacing).
There are a ton of wheels out there, and it is hard to pick (I just went through this). I think if you picked a more modern 5 spoke style wheel it would really fit the car. With that color you can go polished, chrome or natural finish and all will look right at home (even a black/dark finish). I think my first choice would be a natural finish followed by polished.
Good luck.
ChevyThunder Feb 18th, 05, 12:09 PM Just found out from Roger at Tire Rack that they have picked up American Racing Wheels vintage line. Will be available in 4 to 6 weeks.Just another option for all of us considering wheels changes
Chris396 Feb 18th, 05, 02:26 PM I have the Torque Thrusts on my car. You can see them in the link on my signiture. I painted the centers with rally wheel paint which is silver with a hint of green and they get many compliments when I take it out.
RS3SDL2MG Feb 18th, 05, 02:36 PM :D we are limited in the camaro world to three wheel's :D
#1 ralley wheel's
#2 torque thrust's
#3 cragar's
:D
ChevyThunder Feb 18th, 05, 04:08 PM you want Cragar's..I got your Cragar's!
