I am looking into purchasing some weld drag lites for my camaro. on the back i have already gotten the longer studs so i meet the nhra requirements, but i was wondering if i would need to change the front studs as well. using the proper lug nut for the rim the stud does not thread all the to the end of the long lug nut, so is this dangerous, or is it only dangerous if you leave them short on the wheels that have the power/drivetrain running through them?

thanks
Rick

What do you mean long lug nuts? Like shank lugs with washers (not acorn seats)? I don’t know if NHRA regs include front wheels, I never thought of that. I would think, off the top of my head, you would want at least same amount of thread contact as if you were using a standard acorn lug (I ‘m using this for a reference in my head). What are they, maybe 1”? I would want at least that much stud/nut contact. If they are open lug nuts, I might just do the longer studs just in case.

Maybe check the latest NHRA tech manual.

I'm running the Prostars without any issues. NHRA does require long studs on front once you get to 9's or 130mph... I think it was. Rule book at work.

I'm replacing my rear studs and had nothing but problems, already broke 2 installing. I bought the .480knurl 3" studs. Brought calipers home from work last night and measured stud holes in axels. Hard to believe the stock holes are .4637, thats a .025" press and ain't happening. So now it looks like I got to open the holes up some. woohoo  .

Doug, I just went through the same thing. I ended up getting some Dorman wheel studs at the local parts store that had the correct knurl size and they pressed right in. They were also the right length. I'm not sure they come in three inch lengths, but the longest I found was a 2 1/8 inch length.

Rick, sorry to steal your post, wasn't intended.

Drag67, what size drill did you use ? I just bought 15/32's and looks like it will have .0137" press as compared to the stockers with a .0126" press. I think it will work ?

Yep I call the speed shop looking for smaller ones, .480 is the smallest. These are Moroso too. actual measurement .4875" @ knurl.

NHRA is specific as stating any aftermarket wheel.........requires the stud diameter to be the minimum thread engagement into the hex portion of the nut. No mention as to front axle exemption.

I've used Moroso & Dorman studs and have been able to seat the new stud with an extra steel OE lugnut and two washers and a four-way wrench and plenty of oil/grease for both the stud and washers.

The .480 stud will work in 1st gen hubs/flanges.

Doug, I ended up takin one axles up to 31/64 which was too big, had to tach the studs in to keep them from movin just a bit, the other axle I used 15/32, I'm afraid to do the fronts because the rears were such a pain, I'm gonna go grab the studs and part # on them Everett, and see if those will fit my fronts.....

15/32 's was tight and won't fully seat. I used a .005 shim steel to wrap the bit 1/3 turn and reamed it out. Worked great and studs fully seated with .0112 press.

Now for the other side.
