Can someone please tell me what the gas tank is supposed to have on it to protect it in my 69Z. I cleaned off all of the caked up gunk & slop and wanted to know what, if anything, I should put back on it to protect it. I tried doing a search but could not find anything, probably looking in the wrong area and wrong key words. Thanks in advance.

I am pretty sure that from the factory the tanks were just left bare metal. Most everyone puts some type of good quality paint to duplicate the original metal type finish. I personally would use some type of a single stage urethane paint like from ppg or dupont. If you go with spray can paint, it will not hold up all that great.

I cleaned mine then Scothed with a red ScothBrite. I then sprayed it with 'Stainless Steel' paint from Seymor paint company (spray can). The tank really looks good. I also primed prior to spraying. I also used this paint to paint the drive shaft. The color was so close to the natural steel color that I could not tell where I had painted.
Good luck.

Hop over to my link here and see my new tank, I coated with 2 coats of POR Clear paint, then 2 coats of spray bomb clear coat. POR black on the straps and it look great yet, 2 years later.

Original tanks were galvanized. I think click is on the right track with the clear.
