i have a GM crate motor with a roller cam and need to get a fuel pump push rod. i see comp cams has one with a roller on the end, is this necessary or will the plain bar type work? also, wouldn't mind a little input on mechanical fuel pumps.

You don't need one with a roller on the end, but if you use a straight rod you need to get one with a bronze tip on the end that goes against the cam. Crane and Comp Cams both sell them. The one with the roller has to be indexed to keep it from rotating. Not sure if machine work is involved there.

I run a Carter 172 "NASCAR" mechanical pump on my 540...good enough to support 696 hp on the dyno. Comes with -10AN inlet and -08AN output.
I've got an extra one for sale if your interested...email me.
With the roller cam, you'll need a bronze tipped pushrod as noted above.

Hate to bust your bubble on this topic,,, may want to check first on what happen to another person on this site... he cant get his bronze tip push rod out of the block,,, I think it was either not compatable with the hydra roller or galled inside the hole. He was using the hi pressure Holley pump and this tipped push rod.... I am using a comp hydra roller with stock solid rod and stock 40987 AC pump.... May want to see what he finds after he pulls rod out of hole,,, if he can. Comp recommended I stay with the stock rod if I was using stock std psi pump. So far , so good. Has something to do with metallurgy on components.

Hehe well I ordered a new AC Delco Fuel Pump and plan to leave the rod alone even though I can't pull it out. Its pumping fuel just fine but I was getting a noise from the Holley pump at all rpms. I can reproduce the noise by moving the pump lever with my fingers so I believe the noise is hopefully just on the 2001 Holley pump spring.
If the pump rod is mushroomed its mushroomed and I'm not tearing the engine apart just for that darn rod to come out. Its the matching rod for the cam and was installed properly by Beck Racing Engines so my guess is its not mushrooms that its just something else causing it to not fall out.
New AC Delco Pump was $17 from rockauto.com, which can easily pump the 38 gph a 465hp engine wants at WOT, even though you can't dump the quadrajet bowl dry on a quarter mile! Hopefully I'll have a quieter fuel pump with this AC Delco unit.

Not that it matters, but I don't think there is anything else that can hold it in there that I know of???

But, you are right, as long as it's working, why mess with it..

Like Roy Rogers used to sing,,, Until we meet again... I agree with you but logic says that they should fall out with the pump out of place,, always had trouble keeping them in before. goferit.

I'm using a stock stock GM rod on a steel roller cam with a stock fuel pump. No problems.

Same thing here Al, no problems at all.

It always seems that you and I are on the same page anyway :beers:

This is a very confusing topic ! I've installed a Comp hyd roller cam in my '96 350 block, and I was told by Comp that I needed to use the bronze tipped rod. I bought one, but I haven't installed it yet, because I have not bought my fuel pump. If I'm not mistaken, I think that DjD said that the fuel pump lobe on his hyd roller cam was ground off by a stock rod, and he had to install an electric pump. I'm not sure what I need to do at this point ! Thanks, Ron.

If Comp says to run a bronze tip with your cam then run a bronze tip rod. I run one with my Crane hyd. roller and have no problems with it. if a pump rod gets mushroomed on the end then something else is wrong.
Running a bronze tip rod with my cam had nothing to do with the fuel pump lever pressure. I ran what was recommended by my cam manufacturer. They should know what it needs.

Rons68,,, What fuel pump was DjD running? Scott at Comp told me that I didn't have to have bronze tip rod if using stock AC pump,,, Any of the hi pressure jobs, Yes.
