i'm in the process of replacing my front wheel studs and was wondering what is the easiest/best method to go about this. will i have to remove the drum brake assembly and press them out, or is there a way i can whack them out with a hammer and possibly put the new ones in while the assembly is still mounted on the spindle?

the car is a 69 camaro with stock front drums, upgrading to longer studs to run my new draglites.

You will have to remove the hub from the spindle as there is not enough room behind the hub to backing plate for the length of stud. Place the lugnut onto the stud and support the back side of the hub and remove with hammer (BFH).

I remove the hub and place support underneath the hole in the flange where the new stud is going to be inserted.

Place the new stud into the hole, use a brass drift punch atop the stud, and install with large hammer (BFH). Do not hammer directly onto the stud. Make sure there is 360* support about the hole.

Finish the install by using an extra OE lugnut turning it around, using the flat side, and two washers and plenty of lube on the washers and the threads to pull the stud squarely into the hole.

Parallelism/concentricity of all five studs can be proven with the brake drum install. Minor alterations of drum stud holes can be accomplished with a round file.

I've had good luck wth this method and the drum has slipped over the studs without any other action.

Don't whack the studs while the hub is still on the car to remove them. It will wreck the wheel bearings. Remove the studs with the hub on the workbench.
