Hey all, I have a 10 bolt rear end in my 67 and want to know if I build a 383 stroker the puts out about 400 to 500 HP will the 10 bolt hold up to alittle street strip action and what is the differencs between a 10 bolt and a 12 bolt rear end besides the obvious.

The original 10 bolt has an 8.2" ring gear, the 12 bolt is something like 8.75". 12 bolts are flat out bigger and stronger all over, every peice inside it.

A good rebuilt 8.2 10 bolt will handle 400 hp for a good long time, but the 12 bolt will handle 500 forever.

Course, this all depends on how the car "leaves". Lotsa tire smoke and little traction don't shock the car much, dead hooking a set of slicks with a 4 speed or a high stall converter shocks things hard, and it's driveline shock, not torque that kills drivetrain parts.

There's also the 8.5" corporate 10 bolt used in the '70's. These are almost as strong as 12 bolts, lots cheaper, and ones out of nova/omega/ventura's will bolt right in.
