I recently purchased a 94 z28, the car's in good shape but has little minor problems I'm trying to fix. The car will take couple of cranks to start so I tried replacing the starter but it did not do the job. I saw on one of the other posting that fuel pump might be going out. I have a fuel pump coming but do I have to drop the tank to replace the pump. I'm in the military overseas so I'm limited to parts and test equipment. I have a auto craft shop to help me.

Another problem is when I replaced my starter my SES light came on, I'm in a process of replacing the air filter, plugs and plug wires. Once I do all this and SES remains on how do I go about resetting the computer.

I don't have a local autozone to check the computer..any suggestions will help a guys in need...

Why replace the fuel pump? Did you pressure check it? Change the Fuel Filter? That is pricey and hard to do. Did you check the fuel pump relay? All you need is a test light.

Pretty sure you can reset the puter by disconnecting the battery for about 5 min then hooking abck up. That's what I used to do with my S10.

BonzoHensen, thanks for your reply. How do you pressure check your fuel pump? and what symptom would you experience with a clogged fuel filter? I can do simple vehicle maintenance but doing pressure check and relay test are little out of my league.

As I said, I'm trying to do maintenance with the help of auto craft shop offered on military base.

to do a fuel pressure test you need a fuel pressure guage.u hook that up to the schrader valve on the fuel rail.once you have it hooked up turn the key to the on position(without starting it).read the pressure, it should hold pressure for a while, i think at least a half hour.if it drops then its more than likely the pump.i posted a few days ago how to see if its the fuel pump by turning the key on and off to prime the pump.you might want to check the fuel pressure regulator,it has a diaphram inside and that sometimes goes bad.just pull the vacum line off the regulator and if gas comes out u have found your problem.good luck............

Just ahead of your starter is a knock sensor screwed into the water drain hole in the block. You usually have to unplug this sensor to remove the starter. Make sure you plugged it back in!
The end of it has a plastic cup with two pads, you squeeze the pads towards each other to remove the plug. I left one off two days ago and the SES light came on. The car will run sluggish too.

David Pozzi, thanks for your advice. I'll check that out the sensor ASAP. Hope this is a easy fix for SES light...

emtcee1973, I did read about priming the fuel pump by turning the key on and it does help. This was the reason why I suspect the fuel pump being bad. But I'll still check the pressure, hope this is the problem (even though it might be little effort to change the pump out) because ordering parts from overseas sucks and takes too long to get here....

To all who responded to my problem thanks a alot...
